Immigration will be a major issue during the next administration, but it is not the issue in this campaign. Rubio is also a good spokesman for the party, even without being the veep pick. I think one of the reasons Romney hasn't spoken much on the issue is it doesn't help him and it could hurt him. He has made his stand on border control, and that's probably all we'll hear about it.LawHawkRFDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17800255923675295515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425587034622601550.post-14569870642061121562012-08-19T07:35:17.249-04:002012-08-19T07:35:17.249-04:00LawHawkRFD said...

There will be some form of amnesty somewhere along the line. The current situation is intolerable. But we don't have to legalize all of the current illegals (which is more like 12 to 15 million). Border security is issue number one, then we move on. We can still get rid of a lot of the undesirables the same way you eat a whale--one bite at a time. But until we secure the borders, it's an exercise in futility.

Obama's order makes the border problem worse. At least when illegals were caught crossing before, they could be tossed right back. Now, just say the magic word "DREAMer" and they're home free.
-----
I think Romney's chances of devising a plan for immigration reform and getting backing from a majority of Republicans are no better or worse without Rubio then they would be with him.

However, I think those chances are slim. Bush's attempt to reform immigration died due to the strength of public opposition when the economy was a lot healthier than it is now.

Anyway, I agree with you that Obama seems to have effectively stopped deporting people who aren't violating laws other than immigration laws.

I expect Romney will tighten things up a bit, though it doesn't seem to be an issue he is passionate about one way or the other (judging by the fact he hasn't spoken about it much).Anthonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16124128949343301445noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425587034622601550.post-73891717628562684512012-08-18T12:49:03.985-04:002012-08-18T12:49:03.985-04:00T-Rav: When I was your age (I'm guessing) ano...T-Rav: When I was your age (I'm guessing) another lawyer said to me "if I had one word to describe you, it would be 'angry.'" Glad I sobered up and only get angry about things we can do something about.

I'm not sure how counterproductive your approach is (or would be), but it certainly isn't popular publicly. In fact, I fear that I'm getting overly and prematurely grouchy, to the point where if I get asked questions like "Don't you care about the poor Mexican immigrants who risked everything to get here?" I'm going to say something like "No, screw them," just for the sake of outraging people. Even if I thought the Congressional proposal was too broad, the executive order is an outright challenge to Congress's authority and the Constitution. It's a double-whammy. A president ruling by fiat, and a haphazard, sloppy and overly-inclusive immigration policy put into place. The balkanization you speak of is already well advanced, and this only makes it worse.LawHawkRFDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17800255923675295515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425587034622601550.post-12769950032572264962012-08-18T11:42:44.203-04:002012-08-18T11:42:44.203-04:00tryanmax: Assimilation is one place we've gon...tryanmax: Assimilation is one place we've gone completely off the rails. Even those who do everything right and get their visas and later their citizenship are no longer encouraged to become American. Bilingualism is a curse, and it doesn't only affect Hispanics.

I've mentioned this before, as well. Six of my eight grandchildren qualify as Hispanic for census and Democratic vote-grabbing simply because of their last names. It's ridiculous. If he’s successful, and checks and balances are not restored, “Executive, Legislative, Judicial” …the result could be anarchy. In essence the rule of law will be replaced with mob rule at the legislative, dictatorial powers at the executive, kangaroo courts at the judicial, a ‘60s radicals dream…they think. The country would Balkanize, pitting one group against the other, dare I say, Helter-Skelter, Charlie Manson would be so pleased. The one good thing, we’ll have a comprehensive list of illegal invaders. Within a few generations, many even identify as simply "white" and drop the Hispanic part, even if their surname continues to be "Hernandez" or other such obviously Spanish names. This assimilation pattern includes political assimilation where Democrats are unable to lock down the majority of white males.

However, in the short term, yes the Democrats could really screw up this country. If they can manage to hold the reins of power long enough, they may be able to finish building their dream system (see what I did there?) where elections no longer matter. Hey, that's one way to end illegal immigration!tryanmaxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09881154741574720094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425587034622601550.post-82747933604025276192012-08-18T03:02:48.240-04:002012-08-18T03:02:48.240-04:00Their dream. It will be interesting if this turns out to be another net loser for Obama.

Other than the open border thing, this is a smart move by the Obama administration. No matter what Romney says, the Republicans will be granting amnesty at some point - hopefully after truly securing the borders. Obama is just beating them to it for the votes. You don't start deporting 20-30 million people who have lived her most of their lives without creating a huge humanitarian crisis.
