Bonus Question: Favorite Female Character?

Commentarama Reader Cheryl noticed that our last discussion brought out a lot of male characters but almost no female characters. . . well, none really. So today we ask everyone to name their favorite female character, and tell us why.

16 comments:

  1. Marlene Dietrich in Witness for the Prosecution. In all my years in trial courts, I never had a witness that interesting, or that devious.

  2. I like Sigourney Weaver in Alien. Or Grace Kelly in Rear Window.

  3. I like both those, too, Andrew.

I do fall back to Gone With the Wind, though and like both Scarlett and Melanie.

For recent characters, I like Kim Cattrell's Vulcan in Star Trek VI.

  4. Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich in "Judgment At Nuremburg" and since we are talking about favorite women (and just to be contrary), Burt Lancaster in the same movie...

And I just can't let go of Melanie Hamilton Wilkes in GWTW.

  5. CrispyRice, I like Kim Cattrell's Vulcan much better than Kirsty Allen's or any from the later series. Cattrell seemed to get what "non-emotional" meant.

You people and your Gone With The Wind! LOL!

  6. Vivien Leigh as Scarlett in GWTW. Yes, I know she wasn't very nice, but she never gave up. And she got to wear some really pretty clothes. Although I'll never forget that spoof skit Carol Burnett did years and years ago on her show where she played Scarlett O'Hara with a curtain rod threaded through her dress. You've got to know GWTW and Carol Burnett to understand the joke. It still makes me laugh.

  7. Marlene belting out "See What The Boys In The Backroom Will Have" in Destry Rides Again is also a great piece of moviemaking. She was "Frenchy," of all things. What was a nice German girl doing in a place like that?

  8. Writer X, I have to admit that of all the women in GWTW, I like Scarlett best.

Lawhawk, I never did get Dietrich's appeal.

  9. Katherine Hepburn in “Bringing up Baby.”

    Shirley McClain in “Being There.”

Faye Dunaway in “Bonnie and Clyde.”

    Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth.”

  10. the Steel Magnolias - except Shelby (Julia Roberts) and Annelle (Daryl Hannah)...
loved Truvie, and M'Lynn, and Clairee, and even Ouiser!!

other than that I'm drawing blanks... the other one was easier!

  11. I'm flattered to have my name mentioned on the funnest and brilliantest blog site on the internet!

To add to my Diane Keaton pick I will say the Shirley Temple character in The Little Princess and the Drew Barrymore character in Ever After.

Both because even in the face of spirit-crushing lives/circumstances they retain their kindness, goodness, gentleness, selflessness and treat others with grace, charity and love.

  12. Cheryl, Any time! I have really come to like Drew Barrymore.

rlawTX, no love for Julia Roberts huh? I've never really liked her as an actress.

CrisD, good movie, very original role too.

    Stan, Hepburn, great actress.

  13. Scarlet Johanssen's character in THE ISLAND (and if you haven't seen it, it's a great movie - about four years ago - a sleeper)

  14. LL, That was a good movie. Well done, and an interesting concept.

  15. Does it have to be from a movie? Because if not, it's definitely Karen Walker from 'Will & Grace'....if not it's Bridget Jones from Bridget Jones.

I gotta agree with Stan H-- Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth.” Her performance in "the Golden Age" was definitely not as good.
