Commentarama Reader Cheryl noticed that our last discussion brought out a lot of male characters but almost no female characters. . . well, none really. So today we ask everyone to name their favorite female character, and tell us why.
Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich in "Judgment At Nuremburg" and since we are talking about favorite women (and just to be contrary), Burt Lancaster in the same movie...
And I just can't let go of Melanie Hamilton Wilkes in GWTW.
CrispyRice, I like Kim Cattrell's Vulcan much better than Kirsty Allen's or any from the later series. Cattrell seemed to get what "non-emotional" meant.
Vivien Leigh as Scarlett in GWTW. Yes, I know she wasn't very nice, but she never gave up. And she got to wear some really pretty clothes. Although I'll never forget that spoof skit Carol Burnett did years and years ago on her show where she played Scarlett O'Hara with a curtain rod threaded through her dress. You've got to know GWTW and Carol Burnett to understand the joke. It still makes me laugh.
Marlene belting out "See What The Boys In The Backroom Will Have" in Destry Rides Again is also a great piece of moviemaking. She was "Frenchy," of all things. What was a nice German girl doing in a place like that?

To add to my Diane Keaton pick I will say the Shirley Temple character in The Little Princess and the Drew Barrymore character in Ever After.
Both because even in the face of spirit-crushing lives/circumstances they retain their kindness, goodness, gentleness, selflessness and treat others with grace, charity and love.
Marlene Dietrich in Witness for the Prosecution. In all my years in trial courts, I never had a witness that interesting, or that devious.

ReplyDeleteI gotta agree with Stan H-- Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth.” Her performance in "the Golden Age" was definitely not as good.
