Captioning: Put Down The Twinkie!

Michelle Obama ruthlessly mocks a husky fourth grader as part of her "shame a fat kid to stop eating" program, announced by President Obama during his awful state of the union.

  1. My first thought from reading the headline was from Ghostbusters: "What about the Twinkie?"

This is paraphrased from "Marge vs. the Monorail" - one of the best Simpsons episodes.

Obama: "I'm here to answer any questions you children may have about the monorail."
Student 1: "Can it outrun The Flash?"
    Obama: "You bet!"
Student 2: "Can Superman outrun The Flash?"
    Obama: "Uh... sure. Why not."

  3. Scott, Great episode. And whether you meant it or not, I would say similar premise... :-)

  4. Liberals have a tendency as a group to mock the less fortunate. There is no reason why the First Lady wouldn't mock an overweight child.

  5. Bev, What I want to know, is what is Barack's face about? He looks like some kid just called him a name, or like he's planning to do something unpleasant to someone...

  6. P.S. Scott, great Ghostbusters quote!

  7. LL, You make a good point.

On a related note, I was amazed to hear that as part of his State of the Union speech. That sounds like the kind of "make-work project" they give people like Biden to keep them out of trouble, not something you put into a prime time speech.

  8. Why not "shame a dumbo eared donkey to quit smoking" or shame a mean first lady to quit scowling like Angela Davis?

  9. "You there, typical white kid. I saw you cross to the other side of the hall when my secret service agents came in. Racism isn't niiiiiice!"

  10. Andrew: Was the fat kid also "retarded." And as for Ghostbusters, does he look at all like the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man?

  11. Andrew - Barry is annoyed because of this question:

Little Kid: Are you a Bolshevik or a Socialist 'cause my Mommy says you're a Bolshevik, but my Daddy says you're a Socialist.

    Barry: [harumph]

Michelle: Kids say the darndest things! Eat green vegetables!

  16. This looks like one of those "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" moments, and I'm guessing the fifth grader won when Obama couldn't answer a question about the U.S. Constitution.

And, really. These obesity programs for kids are so annoying. Here's a tip: Turn off the TV and go outside and play. It's worked pretty well for generations of kids. Why is it now suddenly so difficult? It's like kids are being programmed to believe that they can't be active unless an NFL team (or apparently a bored First Lady) parachutes into their neighborhoods...

  17. Writer X, He does look like he just lost. . . on an easy question! LOL!

    Teacher: "Name the current President."

    Obama: "It was Bush's fault."

    Kid: "That dude from Kenya."

  18. Totally unrelated:

Loved the Sci-fi thread! Thanks for the info & conversation!

Although, given some of y'all's reasoning about this picture, this comment might not be sooo unrelated... :-)

  20. rlaWTX, I thought it was a very interesting thread. We should find ways to bring the topic to science fiction more often because so many people seem to be interested in that?

And you're right, I'm noticing a sci-fi theme creeping into this photo discussion as well! LOL!
