Andrew: I haven't been able to stand much of what passes for music since the early 90's (which partially explains why I didn't catch your reference to Eminem). And now we just went through Holy Week, so the last five I listened to were hymns and sacred music. But during regular times, any music in my house will be old-time rock and roll, some easy listening, and The Eagles and Aerosmith, with occasional forays into Guns 'n Roses, when it's not classical. John Mayer is one of the few newer artists I'll listen to, and now he's wearing thin.

I listen to film scores about 99% of the time... which means I'm a big hit at parties, as you can imagine. :-)
ReplyDeleteRight now, I'm listening to a bootleg of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Gremlins, which is both excellent and totally ridiculous, complete with synthesized animal sound effects! I'm listening to a bootleg because the full-length score has never been commercially released but we film score nerds are hoping that'll change this year.

ReplyDeleteWell the last thing was a horrible "song" called "Bree Bree" by Brokencyde. One of my kid's friends made a post about it on facebook, so I looked it up. Ok, I realize I'm old and I'm no longer "cool" to the 13 year old set... but why in Heaven's name would anyone like this piece of crap? Not every song I liked pleased my mom and dad either, but awful is too kind a word for this. Look it up on YouTube. I dare you.

USArtguy, This was just the past 5 songs, or you would have seen more funk. I was listening to Bobby Womack in my car yesterday. Of course, I was also listening to Savage Garden and Supertramp.

My current car playlist mostly consists of songs I found by looking up samples from various hip hop songs I liked despite their lyrics. Most of the time the samples turn out to be much better than it's new incarnation.

I'm finding it harder and harder to find good songs these days myself, and I've turned to trying to track down interesting songs that I hear in commercials or in the background of television shows. Fortunately, the internet makes that a lot easier than it used to be!

ReplyDeleteThere was a very funny animated series in the 90s called The Critic, featuring the voice of Jon Lovitz. He played a movie critic/wannabe director who, in one episode decides to call it quits and pursue a career as a trucker.
He volunteers to drive their oldest truck and someone warns him:
"There's a Supertramp tape stuck in the tape player."
"What about that other truck over there?"
"That one has Leonard Nimoy singing Supertramp stuck in the tape player!"
Still makes me laugh... :-)

I have several playlists on youtube and my tastes are all over the place (i.e. old school funk like The Dazz Band and Earth Wind & Fire, to new wave like Depeche Mode and The Cure, and hard rock/heavy metal like Queensryche, Kansas and Night Ranger. I am definitely a child of the 80's when it comes to music, but there are a few newer songs that I can listen to. TJ

ReplyDeleteAndrew, I can thank my husband for introducing me to them. The albums to check out are: Rage for Order, Operation Mindcrime and Empire. These came out in the late 80's, early 90's. I'm not too familiar with their later stuff. It's my understanding that when their lead guitarist, Chris DeGarmo, left their sound wasn't quite the same. Their lead singer, Geoff Tate, has really got some pipes. One of my favorite songs by them was "Eyes of a Strager" which you can find on youtube.
