Discussion: Last Five...

Have you ever seen these "name the last..." type questions that are all over the web? Let's try one. What are the last five songs you listened to. Not the ones you wanted us to think you listen to, but the ones you actually listened to. . . uh huh, those. Britney Spears and what else?

28 comments:

  1. Ok, fine, I'll start...

Lenny Kravitz -- I Belong To You
Confederate Railroad -- When You Leave That Way
New Order -- Round and Round
Police -- Bring on the Night
    Shaggy -- Hope

  2. Andrew: I haven't been able to stand much of what passes for music since the early 90's (which partially explains why I didn't catch your reference to Eminem). And now we just went through Holy Week, so the last five I listened to were hymns and sacred music. But during regular times, any music in my house will be old-time rock and roll, some easy listening, and The Eagles and Aerosmith, with occasional forays into Guns 'n Roses, when it's not classical. John Mayer is one of the few newer artists I'll listen to, and now he's wearing thin.

    Now get off my lawn.

  3. I listen to film scores about 99% of the time... which means I'm a big hit at parties, as you can imagine. :-)

Right now, I'm listening to a bootleg of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Gremlins, which is both excellent and totally ridiculous, complete with synthesized animal sound effects! I'm listening to a bootleg because the full-length score has never been commercially released but we film score nerds are hoping that'll change this year.

    -The Gremlin Rag
    -Time to Go Home, Gizmo
    -Gizmo to the Rescue
    -The Toy Store/Searching for Stripe
    -The Cinema is Destroyed

And something tells me this isn't what you had in mind. :)

  4. You all everybody--Drive Shaft
    Little Wonders--Rob Thomas
    Wake Up--Arcade Fire
Some Michael Jackson song that just happened to be on the radio
That "So What, I'm still a Rock Star" song that I don't know who sings it.

  5. Lawhawk, Why do I suspect that you're secretly an Eminem fan! LOL!

Eagles, Aerosmith and some GNR are all good choices! Of course, I like classical too.

  6. Scott, All music counts. Soundtracks can be quite good, and to each his own. :-)

  7. Tam, I like Rob Thomas, and sadly, much Michael Jackson

  8. punkdISCO - Oral Hygiene
    KMFDM - Virus
    New Order - Paradise
Fight Like Apes - Something Global
New Model Army - Snelsmore Wood

I know this because I haven't bothered to replace the same mix CD I've had in my car for the past six months.

  9. wasatchmo, I used to do that, then I got a hard drive in my car. I put it on random so I'm all over the place musically these days.

    New Order -- good call.

  10. Lorenna McKennitt - The Mummy Dance
    Nicholas Gunn - Canyon Nights
    Miranda Lambert - White Liar
Josh Gracin - We Weren't Crazy
    Eva Cassidy - Songbird

    Sorry, no Britney Spears today.

  11. Writer X, The Mummy Dance? I haven't heard that one. . . but then, I'm not into Egyptian music! ;-)

  12. Alot of Stephen Sondheim. It's his 80th birthday this year (Yes, all year!), so it's all we NY'ers are allowed to listen to. Fine with me..the score to "Assassins" is my fave!

  13. Bev, Forced show tunes? What is going on in New York?

  14. Well the last thing was a horrible "song" called "Bree Bree" by Brokencyde. One of my kid's friends made a post about it on facebook, so I looked it up. Ok, I realize I'm old and I'm no longer "cool" to the 13 year old set... but why in Heaven's name would anyone like this piece of crap? Not every song I liked pleased my mom and dad either, but awful is too kind a word for this. Look it up on YouTube. I dare you.

    Grumble, grumble.

    Anyhoo...

    The 5 before that
Swingtime in the Rockies by Benny Goodman
    Driving Wheel by Albert King
    Josie by Steely Dan
Our Lips Are Sealed by the Go-Go's
That's Not My Name by The Ting Tings

I have eclectic tastes and my iTunes is set to 'shuffle'. What can I say? :-)

Andrew, where's that 70s Funk you were interested in recently?

  15. USArtguy, This was just the past 5 songs, or you would have seen more funk. I was listening to Bobby Womack in my car yesterday. Of course, I was also listening to Savage Garden and Supertramp.

I'm like you, I like to put my player on shuffle and see what comes up.

  16. My current car playlist mostly consists of songs I found by looking up samples from various hip hop songs I liked despite their lyrics. Most of the time the samples turn out to be much better than it's new incarnation.

Here is the website I used to find those samples and my last five:

    http://www.whosampled.com/

    1) Family Of Eve - Please Be Truthful

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yfkpU5fouE

    2) Tammi Terrell - All I Do

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIOHZeBBGIc

    3) Donovan - Get Thy Bearings

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRZRj3whhp4

    4) The Charmels - As Long As I've Got You

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wylfBQjL8I

    5) Ethel Beatty - It's Your Love

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7MPbK9EEVs

By the way, I've enjoyed your website for quite a while. The articles and comments have been great. And as a political newbie, I especially like how you break down issues in a clear and detailed way.

  17. Thanks HaroldLV! We're happy to have you here. :-)

That's an interesting method for finding songs. I'm finding it harder and harder to find good songs these days myself, and I've turned to trying to track down interesting songs that I hear in commercials or in the background of television shows. Fortunately, the internet makes that a lot easier than it used to be!

  18. Andrew - Re: Supertramp...

There was a very funny animated series in the 90s called The Critic, featuring the voice of Jon Lovitz. He played a movie critic/wannabe director who, in one episode decides to call it quits and pursue a career as a trucker.

He volunteers to drive their oldest truck and someone warns him:

"There's a Supertramp tape stuck in the tape player."

"What about that other truck over there?"

"That one has Leonard Nimoy singing Supertramp stuck in the tape player!"

    Still makes me laugh... :-)

  19. Scott, I remember the show, but I never watched it. That's a funny line though. Did you ever hear Leonard Nimoy singing "Proud Mary"? It's awful!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nope and judging from your comment, I'll stay away!

  21. Billy Idol - Flesh For Fantasy
Tony Carey - A Fine, Fine Day
Duran Duran - Save a Prayer
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Runner
    Queen - Somebody to Love

I have several playlists on youtube and my tastes are all over the place (i.e. old school funk like The Dazz Band and Earth Wind & Fire, to new wave like Depeche Mode and The Cure, and hard rock/heavy metal like Queensryche, Kansas and Night Ranger. I am definitely a child of the 80's when it comes to music, but there are a few newer songs that I can listen to. TJ

  22. TJ, I have all of that on my own playlist -- except for Queensryche!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Andrew, you gotta have some Queensryche! They're awesome. TJ

  24. TJ, I'll check them out! I never used to like metal, but I've come around to some of it lately.

  25. Andrew, I can thank my husband for introducing me to them. The albums to check out are: Rage for Order, Operation Mindcrime and Empire. These came out in the late 80's, early 90's. I'm not too familiar with their later stuff. It's my understanding that when their lead guitarist, Chris DeGarmo, left their sound wasn't quite the same. Their lead singer, Geoff Tate, has really got some pipes. One of my favorite songs by them was "Eyes of a Strager" which you can find on youtube.

It's cool that we have similar tastes in music. I knew there was a reason why I like this site so much. Great minds and all that! LOL TJ

  26. TJ, I'll check those out, thanks! :-)

    Great minds. . . absolutely!
