Lawhawk

I have some really bad news about Lawhawk. His daughter has contacted me and told me that he passed away this morning. I'm not sure what to say except that I wish the family the best and I'll let you all know if I hear anything about arrangements.

One thing I should add is that I know that blogging made Larry very happy. He always talked about how much he liked writing the articles and then hearing from all of you.

  3. Bev, I am too. When we spoke yesterday, he said that they were sure they had solved the problems with his heart and everything should be fine. He seemed quite fine.

I'll pass on anything I hear about the arrangements.

  6. LL, It is shocking.

Larry wanted to keep his medical issues private, and he didn't want to share those yet because he was told they could be cured.

The heart thing first came up the other day and his doctors thought they had it under control. But apparently, something went wrong and he suffered a massive heart attack this morning.

    He will definitely be missed.

  15. I literally gasped at learning of Lawhawk's sudden passing. He was so glib about his recent illness that I had no idea he was seriously ill. What a great intellect and writer! When I read his post I rarely if ever disagreed with a thing. Go with God, Larry! I will miss your conservative voice!

  16. Like so many others above, floored and still stunned, even after getting through all the comments.

A brilliant voice so sadly missed -- thanks for the brief time I got to know the words, and RIP, LawHawk. Prayers and condolences to his family.

  25. There is now an unhealable hole in the collective intelegence of the world.
I have known Laurence G. Hawk for over thirty years and will miss him greatly

  26. What an awful thing to come here and find out today.

I remember "meeting" both of you through the comments in the early days of Big Hollywood. You were both always terrific--funny, insightful, knowledgeable--and it was great when you went on your own to found this blog.

Like Andrew Breitbart, Lawhawk was always someone I figured I'd get a chance to meet one of these days. I may still, but not in this life.

His family and friends are in my prayers.

  27. This is tragic. All of you created such a special place here with your wit, your insight and your humor. This really is an oasis of knowledge on the net. Lawhawk will be missed. God bless. My best to his family.

  29. Stunning. I don't know what to say. My heart and prayers go out to his family. I will certainly miss his perspective and his updates on the madness known as San Francisco and California in general. I would like to reach out to his family in some way if possible. :-(

  30. For the relatively short time I have been here, I felt like I knew him as a friend but I barely scratch the surface. I didn't realize he was ill so it came as a shock and I'm still a little stunned. I learned so much in so little time. I will miss him.

  34. I am on vacation and this is my first chance to log on since we landed...the first headline I saw was the one about moving sites, then I thought this title had to be a joke about moving to another place. When I realized the truth, It broke my little heart. So sad. He will definitely be missed. Condolences and prayers to his family.

  35. I mentioned on a previous post that Commentarama was my daily dose of sanity in an insane world. I still feel that way, but the world is so much dimmer with Lawhawk’s passing. I just loved his wit and humor. He will be truly missed. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

  36. It is amazing how someone you have never actually net can make such an impact. I have enjoyed Lawhawk's wit and wisdom, and I will miss him. My abiding condolences to his family...

  37. My condolences to his family. This is so sad. I don´t know what to say. I would have liked to know him. The world is a poorer place without him.

  38. Commentarama just won't be the same without Lawhawk. I wish his family the best during this difficult time.

  42. That’s horrible news. He was a great guy, and will be missed. I loved his good cheer and informed quips, tongue and cheek writing. RIP brother, there’s sadness in Georgia.

    Your Southern friend,
    Stan

  43. Oh my gosh. While my faith tells me Law is home, my heart is heavy with grief. I have been out-of-pocket lately and I am so sorry. I am going to miss this man. I admired him, dare I say loved him, even though I never had the honor of meeting him in person.

RIP, Law. You will be missed.

  44. Indeed, as the others here, I was shocked to read just now of LawHawk's passing. My heart aches for his flesh and blood family and the virtual family here. Though I only new him here and through Big Hollywood previously, Lawhawk's warmth, wit and intellect was greatly admired and will be missed. He didn't belabor his faith in Christ, but I appreciate how he was not timid with it and believe, as he did, in a life after death. So, as a fellow believer I'll not say "so long" but rather "see you later".

  45. I used to comment on Big Hollywood during the early days as Brisco County. Gordon Winslow told me of Lawhawk's passing, and like Gordon said, I always thought I'd meet him one day. Though we only conversed online, I could tell he was a genuinely good man. I'm sorry for your loss, Andrew.

  46. Andrew I couldn't find your email in my address book on google. I had this thought that a nice memorial for Lawhawk would be to put a post and then both of your comments for a few subjects. I think that would be nice and he would like it.

  47. I am stunned and so very sad to hear this news. My deepest condolences.

  48. I'm devastated. I've known Larry since we were 3 and had only talked to him about 4-5 days ago. My heart goes out to his children more than they know.

  49. I heard the news of his passing from a comment by Individualist on BH. Very sad news, indeed. His presence here will surely be missed here. RIP. My thoughts and prayers are to his loved ones.

  50. I last heard from Larry on October 3rd. Didn't get a reply to my last email, which is so unlike the gentleman Larry, so I came to this site. I am tearfully stunned. Larry was my friend and coworker for years. Though we were on opposite sides of the political spectrum, we were on the same side of humanity. He downplayed his setbacks and health complications. He was a true gentlemen, with a wit and sense of humor unmatched. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I will miss him so much. There will never be anyone like him. With a heavy heart, my condolences.

  51. Came here today after a long absence (ill-health) and found out about our dear LawHawk's passing from this world. I feel so blessed to have known him from 'our' BH days. I'll never forget the night of the Oscar's online - what a kick that was - so I am going to remember all the 'good' that of the journey with LawHawk, be thankful that he got out of SF (yeah!)...and send hugs to all of you and his family...'And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make' and LawHawk made a lot.
