SOTU: It's Fight Night!!

In the left corner, we have Barack Obama. . . the Kenyan Nightmare. . . he floats like butter and stings like a B student at Grade Inflation University. Weighing in at 98 pounds, his best punch is a sucker punch recently renamed the Tucson Exploiter by his manager, Joey "Half-Truth" Biden. Barack lost his prior match to Ryan in a first round knock out at health care arena and has been on a career slide ever since. Tonight, he looks for a little revenge.

In the right corner, we have Paul “the Brain” Ryan, the pride of Wisconsin. Weighing in at 140 pounds, Ryan shows that brain beats brawn every time. His best punch is the Principled Hook, which he combines with the Factoid Jab for a devastating 1-2 combination. Managed by John "Tan King" Boehner, Ryan is fast, smart and a real up and comer. His goal tonight will be to take down Obama and prove that he deserves a title fight.

Tonight’s guest judges are the American people, who will be keeping score at home. And you're invited to talk about it here!

Let’s get ready to RUMBLE!!!!

Lol! I'll be here tonight. I hear Obama keeps changing what he's going to say because whatever it is isn't working! Go Ryan!

T_Rav said...

Hey, don't forget Michele Bachmann, who has somehow managed to carve out a second right corner and will be jumping up and down during the fight and going, "Hey! I'm here too!"

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, I heard she was going to speak, but then I never heard any details about it. Where/when is she speaking?

Ed, I'll be here too. If you have any pre-SOTU thoughts, feel free to share those too.

Obama is going with 5 year spending freeze. Nice try, although he must have read your piece about giving away his bargaining position on healthcare. At least he is trying to start with "no cuts" instead of the old "reduction in the level of increase" in defeference to the ass kicking that was delivered back in November

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, There are moments that I honestly wonder if he isn't trying to do the right thing. . . but then that passes and I remember that he's a Democrat.

In terms of the freeze itself... a five year freeze is nice, but it's hardly enough considering how much the budget run up in the past 2-3 years. They should set the budget back to 2006. Then I would be impressed.

Tennessee Jed said...

Bachman's address will be streamed at Teaparty Express website

CrispyRice said...

I can't... I just can't do it... >>sob<< I can't take it...

Tennessee Jed said...

Andrew - he is trying to do the right thing as he sees it. Unfortunately, that way crushes individual liberty and freedoms and keeps our economy from rebounding.

AndrewPrice said...

Crispy, There's no shame in that. He's hard to take. And expect there's going to be a lot of manipulation, especially as he rehashed Tucson and when he tries to tell us about Jane Smith who no longer enjoys Christmas because Republicans took away her health care.

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, That is indeed the problem, that even his good faith best efforts aren't things we want. Still, I have to give him credit for changing the way he's been acting. He's suggesting things now that the 2008 Obama wouldn't even have considered.

T_Rav said...

Andrew, like Jed said, it'll be streaming on the Tea Party website, and won't start until Ryan is done speaking. Incidentally, I actually do like Bachmann, even though some people think of her as a lightweight--how can you not like someone who goes out of her way to tweak Chris Matthews on his own show?--but I don't see the point of giving a separate Tea Party rebuttal. If the GOP was already going back to its RINO ways, that would be different; as it is, I think a show of unity is more productive just now.

There was a little bit of speculation earlier that Bachmann might be getting some revenge on Ryan for not backing her for Caucus Chair, but that seems too petty. I think it's probably a sincere, if misguided, act on her part.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I like Bachmann and I've never considered her a lightweight, though I have heard the charge.

I agree about the need for a separate Tea Party rebuttal -- right now is not the time because the Republicans are doing pretty well.

I also have some trepidation about these Tea Party groups that seem to be behind a lot of the Washington Tea Party activities. They seem out of place to me with the spirit of what made the Tea Party what it was. In other words, whereas the Tea Party seemed to be millions of individuals taking politics into their own hands, groups like the Tea Party Express seem more like old-school lobbyists (e.g. Dick Armey) trying use the Tea Party as a vehicle for their own goals. . . which is why they keep making bombastic and misplaced statements and gestures -- to stay in the news cycle.

I find the troubling.

BevfromNYC said...

Crispy - I am with you. I am not sure that I can actually watch it all the way through, but I will be online and will comment anyway. I really want to see Boehner behind Obama and Fancy Nancy in the audience. I will drink to that!

Andrew and T-Rav - I agree about the separate Tea Party rebuttal and what you say about the Tea Party Express lobby stuff. That is exactly what they are trying to do. Harness the whole thing for their own gain. Many of the smaller groups are doing the same thing on local level. It's annoying. But I also chalk it up to "group" dynamics. Why I've never been a "joiner".

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, I've never been a joiner for the same reason -- group dynamics stink. . . too many free riders and too many people ready to use the group for their own purposes. Plus, groups stifle creativity and make progress painfully slow.

In terms of the DC Tea Party people, I've seen several instances already where I find myself scratching my head, thinking "I don't think actual Tea Party people would agree with that." And each time, the person behind the statement is some "former" lobbyist.

I found it interesting too that so many House members stayed away from the Tea Party caucus. In fact, I think that's a very good sign. Forming a caucus just makes the Tea Party into nothing more than another interest group. The Tea Party is much better off staying harder to quantify, as a set of beliefs shared by an unknown number of engaged voters.

BevfromNYC said...

Andrew - I agree about the Tea Party Caucus. It's just another platform for Michelle Bachmann. But that being said, I have been invited by our TP group (TeaParty365) to be in the gallery at the first Caucus session in DC. If it doesn't snow too badly, I am going to go. I will report on it.

Joel Farnham said...

I just found out Carol Browner has resigned from the Energy and Enviroment Czar post and there is no new name to replace her. Elections do have consequences.

Browner, as some of you know, is an enviromentalist as well as a socialist. She was behind the second-hand smoke hoax. She is notorious for intimidating Auto execs into keeping nothing in writing.

She is also responsible for banning inhalers. The inhalers used by asthma sufferers to relieve asthma attacks. Used properly they are a life-saver. That is before the ban. The reason? The old inhalers used CFC's as a propellant. CFC's supposedly destroy the Ozone layer. Still, they weren't banned because they were an exempt medical device. The current ones are pathetic.

Maybe Barry Soetoro will nominate a new czar tonight?

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, Cool! I look forward to your report!

(And if you happen upon Nancy Pelosi on the trip, don't forget to point and laugh! :-) )

BevfromNYC said...

Actually, I can't wait to see all of our Congresscritters holding hands and sing "Kumbaya"! Did you hear that Nancy snubbed Eric Cantor's invitation to sit together? Yep, she had another date for the Prom and turned him down cold.

It is also rumored that the Supremes will not make an appearance. Oh, that's Justices, not the singing group.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, That sounds like good riddance to bad garbage! I hadn't heard that about the inhalers, but that's really insane.

I would say, let's hope they get someone better, but I doubt he'll nominate anyone better. Still, it will make an interesting test of the new senate!

Thanks for the information.

(I wonder why she resigned today? Odd timing.)

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, I've been seeing that for a couple weeks that the Supreme's weren't coming -- good for them. They don't need the political grief!

I just saw that about Cantor and Pelosi. So much for this "can't we all just get along" business. . . apparently, they can't. LOL!

BevfromNYC said...

I vote for Algore for the new Energy and Environment Czar! He's got experience, so his learning curve would be pretty steep. It might look like that hocky stick graph even. AND he invented the interwebs...

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

(I wonder why she resigned today? Odd timing.)

Issa's investigations are going to be starting soon.

As to the Tea Party Caucus?

Initially I thought they were a good idea, but now.... not so much. Maybe it is because there is a Congressional Black Caucus and it would be too easy for pundits to call the Tea Party Caucus the Congressional White Caucus. Blacks need not apply. Cynical of me? Why not?

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I just don't like the idea of isolating them from the rest of the Congress. Because that way they go from being an idea that all of Congress should respect and fear to being a small group of House members. I think it's better to keep the whole thing nebulous.

Bev, I like the selection of Algore. Or Chicken Little! Both would seem appropriate. LOL!

T_Rav said...

Bev, that's quite an honor!

I'm with you, I'm really not sure I can stand the smarminess that will certainly be Barack Obama tonight (and all other nights). I'm more interested in seeing Paul Ryan's rebuttal--and yet for that to have force, I have to watch at least some of Obama's actual speech. (sigh) Conundrums...

Anonymous said...

I've finished my shopping trek, put the horses and the covered wagon in the barn, and I'm ready for the hot air from DC. I'm far more interested in how Ryan does than I am about our Bloviator-in-Chief.

T_Rav said...

Oh, and Andrew, I hadn't heard that none of the Justices would be coming. I knew Alito, Scalia, and Thomas wouldn't, which makes me like them even more, but it seemed more ambiguous where the others were concerned. I hope it's true, because I think it would look bad if they split their attendance along ideological lines. Honestly, they should all stay away after that stunt last year. Political grandstanding during a national address and then attacking Alito just demonstrated how politically juvenile Obama can be, and a unanimous absence would be a pointed reply to his behavior.

Tennessee Jed said...

Bev - I'm with you on algore, the fondler. Remember, he has demonstrable skills in secret cash raising from Pacific rim countries. These skills could truly help to make us even more owned by PRC.

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, You cynic! But now that you mention it. . . he's also got proven skills when it comes to turning a huge profit based on false science, so maybe he should be secretary of commerce or something instead?

T_Rav, I don't know if it's all of them or not, but I agree -- it should be all or nothing. An ideological split would look bad for the court.

And like you and Lawhawk, I'm really only interested in Ryan's response. Obama doesn't interest me anymore.

Writer X said...

I have my pitcher of martinis ready and I will be watching. Hopefully the vodka martinis will help deaden the pain. But at least I won't have to look at Nancy's maniacal smile in the background.

Anonymous said...

WriterX: I hope you're not following Rush's advice and taking a drink each time the Obamassiah says "investment" and "civility."

BevfromNYC said...

Writer X: You're so classy! I gonna drink right out of the bottle. I don't think I'll have time to pour...

BevfromNYC said...

Okay, the Senate is coming into the House two by two. It's like Noah's Ark! They weren't holding hands though...

T_Rav said...

Since the SOTU will begin soon, I would just like to take this moment to remind everyone not to start any drinking games that involve taking a drink every time Obama mouths phrases such as "Let me be clear" or "We need to make some hard choices." Alcohol poisoning is a terrible thing.

BevfromNYC said...

T-Rav - I add to that "I". That could kill ya'!

StanH said...

Sorry guys and gals I can’t deal with Barry spewing his faux centrist BS. I’ll read, and hear about it tomorrow.

I agree, I don’t like Dick Army and others trying to corral the Tea Party, and call it their own, not cool. It works better as a fluid, moving, impossible to hit political target, or as you say nebulous. Statist Washington, both sides are scared to death of the Tea Party, we need to keep it that way.

AndrewPrice said...

Hey, who's that dude in Nancy's seat?! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

BevfromNYC said...

They are wearing ribbons in remember Rep. Gifford and to show solidarity in civility.

BevfromNYC said...

THe Supremes did show!

Tam said...

Hubby's watching a movie...any word on the supremes yet?

AndrewPrice said...

Dude, we all wore the same thing? Who knew black robes would be so popular?

Tam said...

you beat me to it. Thanks Bev.

AndrewPrice said...

Tam, No Scalia and no Thomas. I didn't hear if Roberts was there, but the rest are.

AndrewPrice said...

I love Jim DeMint...

LawHawk, how about shots after "innovation" and "we have to return to civility"?

Bev, drinking straight from the bottle works in a pinch too.

Enjoy!

BevfromNYC said...

Roberts is there. Is Alito?

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, that would be "no." Only six of them are there.

BevfromNYC said...

Okay, I just can't do it...I will watch the rebuttal.

AndrewPrice said...

Yawn....

Joel Farnham said...

Boehner looks like he is about to throw up.

I have it on live stream from Fox News, but I have the sound turned off. :)

BevfromNYC said...

Someone must have told him to use "We", not "I". I don't think I have every heard him us "We" so much.

AndrewPrice said...

Who writes his speeches? Talk about Dullsville!

If they re-wrote "Gone With the Wind," it would sound like a manual on how to assemble a printer.

Joel Farnham said...

At least a printer's manual is useful.

AndrewPrice said...

"The world ain't what it used to be. When I was young, you could have a job. But not today... nope. The rules have changed. The steel mills are gone and robots will soon rule the earth."

BevfromNYC said...

NASA didn't exist before Sputnik?

T_Rav said...

Bev, Alito had a pre-scheduled speaking commitment in Hawaii, from what I hear. Scalia and Thomas were the ones who said they weren't going to be there because--well, they didn't want to. (By the way, if anyone should have told Obama "screw you" and stayed home over last year, it'd be Anthony Kennedy, who actually wrote that campaign finance decision.)

T_Rav said...

SPUTNIK!!!!!

AndrewPrice said...

My God, this is like an idiot randomly talking about their view of American history.

The Soviets whipped us good, until we showed them.

Did you know that Sputnik was the name of a car we put in a drive way?

America once created computers.

Immigrants washed up on our shores.

I have a budget.

You could once have a job for life?

Two guys in Michigan run a roofing company, but they got hit by the recession. Now they make solar shingles.

Reinvent people. Be smarter. Stop being idiots. Start making jobs.

Have some money.

Assemble scientists.

We'll fund you to create an Appollo project.

Turn sunlight into car fuel.

Turn up the nuclear power! Give me biofuel!

This is awful!!!!!!

AndrewPrice said...

No Bev, NASA was created by a student loan given to a guy in Michigan after China developed steel mills.

John Boehner literally looks like he's about to fall asleep. Strange, considering all these witty and entertaining one-liners POTUS is trotting out. Wait--80% of America's energy will be renewable by 2035? Did he seriously just say that?

Joel Farnham said...

At least this year the Democrats aren't popping up after every sentence.

AndrewPrice said...

BevfromNYC said...

I'd settle for a educational system that teaches our children to read, write, and arithmetic. Can't we start there?

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, That would be awesome!

Joel, No one's jumping up because he's not saying anything that makes sense. He's just spewing simplistic generality.

"Education is good."
"Food poisoning is bad."
"Love your kids, don't eat them."
"We want to reward good things."
"But low, sell high."

T_Rav said...

Does this mean we're going to be renaming them "nation-builders' unions"?

AndrewPrice said...

If you're a Democrat and you needed illegal immigrants voting for you to win, stand up!

BevfromNYC said...

We don't need more infrastructure, we need CHEAP LABOR!!!!!

T_Rav said...

I've got a better idea. Can we build a wall or fence or something on the border, and then worry about whether all the undocumented kids here have had their feelings hurt?

AndrewPrice said...

Let's double down on stupid! Woo hoo!

T_Rav said...

Andrew, was Harry Reid one of those standing up at that line? Oh, speak of the devil (literally)...

T_Rav said...

And don't forget it'll be much easier for the student and firefighter and all them to download porn that way.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, what's cheap labor? Can you find that on a high speed train that sends blueprints to firemen?

BevfromNYC said...

OH! So now lowering the corporate taxes is a good thing and won't hurt the deficit. Did he say the opposite just last month???

T_Rav said...

How are we going to double our exports by 2014? Is this the same math that said we'd extend health coverage to everyone in the country while saving taxpayers money?

Paul Ryan is cuuute!

T_Rav said...

Nice tone to start off with: "Hey, Obama's speech didn't TOTALLY suck." Ha ha!

AndrewPrice said...

"we agree and we think his health care law would be a great place to start...." ZAP!!!

AndrewPrice said...

"Hold all of us accountable." I like that!

Tam said...

unprecedented failure...indeed.

AndrewPrice said...

"We owe you a better choice and a different vision!" Woo hoo!

AndrewPrice said...

Wow!

Tam said...

swoon.

awseome!!!! tell it like it is, baby!

T_Rav said...

Nice hammock reference. I also like how he turned the "it's for the children" argument against the Dems.

BevfromNYC said...

He went there...he went to Greece, Ireland, UK and Europe. Cool...call out the Socialist ideals.

AndrewPrice said...

Wow. I am seriously impressed. That speech was honestly compelling!

T_Rav said...

"[Free enterprise] has done more to help the poor than any other economic system in history."

ZING!!

Joel Farnham said...

Ryan sounds like Reagan. Short, sweet and to the point.

AndrewPrice said...

Seriously, wow. If that had been the SOTU speech, I would have rated it the best ever.

T_Rav said...

Seemed to me like a pretty good speech, though I could be a little biased. I would have liked him to be a little less vague where specific policy proposals were concerned, but then again, he might have lost the audience if he'd gotten too wonkish. Good point from Brit Hume, though: "If you're serious about making cuts, someone's gotta go first."

Joel Farnham said...

Seriously, I didn't expect much from Ryan. He said more in five minutes than Obama said all evening.

AndrewPrice said...

F-you Juan Williams. That's the standard leftist garbage -- somehow Republicans never seem to get specific enough.

Ryan's speech was a fantastic mix of (1) explanation of why we need to act, (2) greater detail than Obama about what they plan to do, and (3) a stunning demonstration that he understands history and our philosophy and how they all relate.

T_Rav said...

Oh, re Joel's point: Apparently just before Ryan went on, Katie Couric described Obama's speech as "Reaganesque." In a related story, I will not be watching the CBS Evening News anymore.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, That's the new talking point. For two weeks now, we've heard nothing but comparison between Obama and Reagan... in magazines, in newspapers, out of the mouths of the talking heads, and from everyone on the journolist.

T_Rav said...

Krauthammer makes a good point. I think Obama's going to play chicken with the Republicans on entitlement spending and try to make it look like they're the ones screwing over seniors.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, That's probably true, but I think they're ready for it.

Joel Farnham said...

Ryan is now the new face of the Republican Party.

I am listening to this live stream from Fox, so I am spared the talking heads.

T_Rav said...

Andrew, I'm just amused at the lengths the media's willing to go to to keep this meme alive. The defects of Obama's speech should be perfectly obvious, and yet she's going to compare him to Ronald Reagan. Right. Not unless she forgot to add the "Junior" before "esque."

Oh, by the way, where's LawHawk tonight?

AndrewPrice said...

Did you see Frank Lutz's focus group? They hated the speech almost universally.

Writer X said...

Oh, my god, that was painful to watch. And I kept getting distracted by Biden. Why does he always act like he's at a carnival?! Next time somebody give him a big lollipop.

My take: It was like watching somebody running for student council. I'm surprised he didn't promise everybody free pizza on Fridays. Long on pretty words; short on substance. Not a huge surprise.

T_Rav said...

Ooh! Obama's SOTU got slammed by Frank Lutz's opinion group on Hannity! I don't know if the group tilts Republican, but this is brutal.

Writer X said...

And I thought Harry Reid was going to choke on his own saliva when he mentioned he wouldn't sign any bills with earmarks. We'll see how long that lasts!
