Protocols Of The Elders Of Carter

This is a picture taken of former worst President, soon to be second worst ex-president, Jimmy Carter. He has just received the reviews of his anti-Israel screed Palestine--Peace Not Apartheid. The Jews conspired to give it a thumbs-down--even the liberals. Either that, or he hasn't had his prune juice yet.

Or maybe he just picked up a bug while he was on his fact-fabrication tour of North Korea. He returned in April from that unauthorized, and I mean unauthorized diplomatic visit to the wonderful Kim Jong Il worker's paradise. Unlike Barack Obama, whose visits are currently official, Carter's visits condemn all things American while visiting totalitarian dictators. Obama merely apologizes for our stupidity and arrogance.

In order to offset the pernicious Elders of Zion, Carter has formed his own group called The Elders who travel with him around the world stirring up peace and damning America. It's a sort of old farts' consortium of aging and discredited world leaders. Not content to bash the Jews alone, Carter and self-appointed Elder Martti Ahtassari of Finland went to Pyongyang to create an agreement with Kuddly Kim that would stop the onerous sanctions imposed on North Korea by the UN (front-men for the evil United States).

It's rumored that Carter proposed that if North Korea would destroy a rifle or two and give up cooking kimchi outside of airtight kitchens, he would convince the Americans to stop making nuclear demands while sending the entire food output of the Midwest to North Korea to make up for their attempt to starve innocent Koreans. Carter was apparently successful in brokering the North Korean end of the agreement, because he rushed back to Washington to present his plan to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

At first Clinton wouldn't comment on the proposed conference, since she was busy screwing free and open governments in Central and South America. She wasn't in any great hurry to accept Carter's calls. Carter has been trying now for about a month and a half to instruct Hillary on how to ease the tensions with North Korea. He's a bit of a dunderhead, and doesn't quite realize that he's not the President any longer. Hillary ain't returning his calls. But he should have recognized that his input was unsolicited and unwanted about the end of April.

Asked by a reporter at that time if Clinton intended to meet with the Peanut King, her undiplomatic response was "No--hell no!" It could be that Hillary was a little testy over some of Carter's public statements while he was visiting North Korea. Among other things, Carter told Kim that the United States and South Korea were conspiring to keep food from the starving North Koreans solely to get political and military concessions. Well, while you're insulting your own country, you might as well insult an ally at the same time and in exactly the right place.

Since returning, and while sitting next to the phone waiting for Hillary's call, Carter and The Elders have been busy undermining US Middle East policy while supporting the merger of two terrorist organizations in Palestine. Carter sees the cozy new friendship of Hamas and Fatah as the first step to peace in Palestine. He knows it will create democracy, and a genuine understanding with those damned recalcitrant Jews who are occupying the Palestinians' lands. The two are merely practicing the old Arab saying that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." They won't turn on each other again until Israel disappears.

Exhibiting a form of logorrhea previously unknown in the United States (he may have picked it up from Kim), Carter has also been blabbing about how "religion" is the cause of oppression of women. Well, he has a good point if you read the Koran. But I'm unclear on which other religions he thinks systematically abuse and demean women. On the Elder's site (www.theelders.org) Carter is also spending his waiting time stirring up animosities between the Cypriot Christians and the Muslims who want to take over the parts of the Greek island that they haven't already captured during a bloody mini-war.

Carter should put his hard-hat back on, put duct tape over his mouth, and go back to building quonset huts for poor people. Mr. Peanut--you're a disgrace to America.

Thankless Thanksgiving for Hope-he Changey

It’s a good thing Barack Obama isn’t that interested in American holidays, because he’s having a horrible pre-Thanksgiving. What’s gone wrong? What hasn’t? Let’s run through these in no particular order.

1. Obama’s job approval ratings have hit a disastrous 39%, with more than 50% of Americans (and many more independents) responding that he does not deserve to be re-elected. In fact, right now, he would lose to any Republican, to Glenn Beck, to the corpse of Richard Nixon, or to a syringe of Ebola.

2. Adding to his unpopularity, Obama’s TSA staff chose this week to start groping the public at airports, and they’ve reacted to the public’s outrage by complaining about fat, smelly Americans. Stay classy TSA! What’s worse, Obama flubbed his response and still doesn’t know what to do. . . even though both left and right apparently agree that TSA has gone too far.

3. Anyone remember how we were going to pull all American troops out of Afghanistan in the summer of 2011? Well, that slipped a little. . . to 2014.

4. Bristol Palin apparently will win some dancing competition, and the media has gone so foaming at the mouth with hate, that the public is once again reminded just how insanely hateful the left has become.

5. North Korea chose yesterday to test Obama’s metal by lobbing artillery shells at an ally that is under the protection of US soldiers. And what kind of metal has Obama proven that he possesses? 100% pure aluminum foil. At least this time, Obama recognizes that what Korea did was a very bad thing. . . he just doesn’t know what to do about it.

6. Joe Biden remains his Vice President and is due to say something really stupid, like last Turkey Day. Oh wait, didn’t he just call Obama “daddy” and tell the military that “daddy was going to take the training wheels off” So does that mean Obama’s been an amateur? Or is he implying that the military is the amateur? And how does that make you feel about the big surge that is already underway and which was supposed to save the day?

7. Remember that mosque in New York City? The one that angered everyone except the extreme left? Well, now they’re filing for federal funding. That means you and I will get to pay for this monument to murder, and Obama will be the guy forcing us to cough up.

8. Finally, MoveOn.org wrote the following about Obama: “Remember Barack Obama in 2008? . . . I miss that guy.”

Sounds like it’s going to be an unhappy holiday. I wonder what else could go wrong? Anyone want to bet the Turkey he pardons gets re-arrested in a double homicide within a week?

Obama To Ask The UN To Lighten Up On Iran And North Korea

On September 24, President Obama will give us a rest from his 24/7 press and TV appearances--sort of. On that day, he will temporarily leave U.S. soil to follow in the footsteps of such great world leaders as Yasser Arafat, Moammar Qaddafi, and Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. But he won't just be making a speech. Not enough for our dear leader. He will take the unprecedented step of presiding over a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Running America is not enough for a man of such monumental ego. He will also run the world.

In keeping with his idea that to see him is to love him, Obama will move out of the narrow confines of provincial America and chair a meeting of the world! He will not need to fly Air Force One around the world to play footsie with the thugs, dictators and fanatics of the world. He simply has to go to nearby Turtle Bay, New York City, and he has them all in one place in the Bauhaus Beast known as the United Nations Building (pictured). This is unprecedented since it is the first time an American President has personally chaired a Security Council meeting. As far as I can remember, it may even be the first time an American President has even attended a Security Council meeting. We all know Obama is about hope, change, firsts, and, oh, peace.

In case you're wondering how this works, the chairmanship of the Security Council rotates every month. The United States holds the chair for the entire month of September this year. Expecting to have solved all of America's problems, healed the sick, raised the dead economy, and created a society of pure equality by late September, Obama now will now move on to the lofty goal of every beauty queen who has ever preceded him--world peace. And we all know he can do it. Just ask him.

If this were just another Obama photo-op, it might only deserve a few snarky comments on the ubiquitous appearances of the face of our dear leader. After all--it's the U.N. How much harm could he do by flashing his pearly-whites and soothing the savage breast with his mellifluous words of peace, love and brotherhood? Answer: plenty.

In what sounds like an innocent statement, Obama's U.N. Ambassador, Susan Rice, announced to the council on September 2 that: "The session will be focused on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament broadly, and not on any specific countries [emphasis added]." The original agenda was to address nuclear disarmament only tangentially, and nuclear nonproliferation with specific reference to certain rogue nations, including but not limited to Iran and North Korea. By eliminating specificity, and re-starting the whole discussion, Obama has negligently or intentionally played right into the hands of the Muslim nations seeking to destroy Israel, enhance their own nuclear capabilities, and weaken America. Make no mistake, this is not a minor matter of semantics, and Obama personally saw to the change in the agenda, which is set by the nation holding the chair.

Obama made it clear to his staff that he would not be satisfied with chairing a routine session on nonproliferation that had been addressed before. And he specifically stated that he did not want to chair a meeting in which Iran and North Korea remain as named violators. Once again, Obama's airy-fairy abstractions about peace must not be inhibited by facts and real action. Rice was given her marching orders directly by Obama. She was required to say that the possible sanctions against Iran and North Korea would not be handled by Obama because they are "uneventful and routine considerations of these regimes. For those issues, we are simply receiving a regularly-scheduled update. [The Obama agenda] is not an opportunity to review or revisit the nature of either of those regimes." Say what?!

With the grinning and surreal Qaddafi seated five chairs away (flush with the return of his heroic Lockerbie Bomber), Obama will now open the floor to terrorist and dictatorial Muslim states to demand the disarmament of Israel while eliminating the possibility that the head of the free world would demand the cessation of nuclear efforts in Iran and North Korea. The U.N. hadn't done anything effective in stopping that proliferation, but at least before Obama changed the agenda, it was a serious issue which an American president could have pushed to action.

As it became apparent that Obama had no intention of doing anything worthwhile about the murderous suppression of dissent in Iran in the wake of a fixed election, the Iranian press boldly mocked the prince of peace by saying "their strategy consists of begging us to talk with them." As chairman of the Security Council, Obama had the opportunity to disabuse Iran of that notion by pushing the sanctions agenda. Instead, he scrapped that agenda so he could proceed to do exactly what Iran predicted he would do. And talk he will. Platitudes, bromides, lofty goals, grand schemes, all full of sound and sweetness, and signifying nothing.

So what does Obama expect to get out of this? The imperfect parallel to Munich comes to mind--peace for our time. And like Chamberlain, he probably believes he will get it. What he really expects (and will get) is oodles of face time on the TV networks, the nutroots, and the front pages of the major newspapers. He will trumpet his changing the agenda to "maintenance of international peace and security [more words with no meaning behind them]." The full-page picture of the President that I expect to see on the front page of the New York Times on September 25th will be headlined: "President Proposes Bold New Agenda For World Peace."

And what else will he get? Public praise from his Muslim and anti-American friends, along with private contempt from the very same people because they know now with deep certainty that the American eagle is just a chicken. As for what the American people will get out of this, the answer is simple. We will get a world that is even more dangerous than it was just twenty-four hours earlier. "Those who do not learn the lessons of history . . . ." You know the rest.

My fondest wish is that this will also be another one of those interminable "Obama moments" that are quickly starting to have the opposite effect from the one intended. People are not just getting sick of seeing that face and hearing those smarmy words over and over. But I think they may also be getting sick of hearing him make plans to destroy America domestically. And now, he is setting the stage for making America a bit player on the world stage.

My worst fear is that even smart people of a conservative bent might see his U.N. action as just another silly Obamarama. There he goes again, mouthing platitudes and grinning for the cameras. I want you all to realize that the seemingly innocent re-wording of the agenda is a major policy shift away from America's determination to be the world's strongest guarantor of freedom.

The Barack Doctrine: Status Quo, Status Quo Ante

Teddy Roosevelt walked softly and carried a big stick. James Monroe declared that the United States would not interfere in Europe, and warned Europe to stay out of the Americas. Harry Truman believed in containment, Jimmy Carter in human rights, and Ronald Reagan in engagement. . . trust but verify.

Is there a Barack Doctrine? Indeed there is. President Obama has shown repeatedly that he desires to vote “present” in foreign policy, and that his administration will toss aside all of their principles to maintain the status quo (as things are) or, where the status quo has been shattered, to return to the status quo ante (as things were).

Status Quo

During the campaign, candidate Obama spoke of engaging the world in dialog. He promised to improve America’s image and to defend human rights. He criticized modern soft-dictators like Chavez, who were elected as democrats, but ruled as tyrants, and he talked of breaking with the past. But that was then.
Observe that in each of the following instances, Obama subsumed his principles to maintain the status quo. . .

• China. . .

The first test for the young administration was China. Candidate Obama criticized China for its human rights, for their failure to fight intellectual piracy, for their suppression of Tibet, for the safety of their products, and for their currency manipulation. He swore he would hold their feet to the fire and might even ban some of their products.

But President Obama wants China to buy his debt. So his first official act was to send Hillary Clinton to bow and scrape and to assure China that he would never pressure them. When this was not enough, and China threatened to stop buying U.S. debt, Obama sent Tim Geithner to plead for the status quo.

• Russia. . .

Next came the Russians, who had invaded Georgia, cut off natural gas supplies to Europe, worked tirelessly to help Iran develop nuclear power, and threatened several NATO allies. Candidate Obama boldly proclaimed that he wouldn’t “shy away from pushing democracy, transparency, and accountability.”

His efforts to date? Obama sent Hillary Clinton with a gag gift (a reset button) and otherwise refrained from any actions that might upset Russia. End result: status quo maintained.

• India. . .

George Bush was roundly criticized by the left for allowing India to make a mockery of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Under that Treaty, all signatories must withhold civilian nuclear technology from any regime that has not ratified the Treaty. Even though India refuses to sign the Treaty, Bush negotiated a deal with India, whereby the United States would transfer nuclear technology to India. Obama’s party called this despicable and said that it sends the wrong message to countries like Iran and North Korean.

President Obama claims that non-proliferation is a primary focus of his foreign policy. Yet, not only did he publicly state that he is “fully committed” to implementing the Bush deal, but Hillary Clinton even voiced the hope that this arrangement (which violates the Treaty) can “serve as the foundation of a productive partnership on non-proliferation.” Again, the status quo is preserved.

• North Korea . . .

Candidate Obama promised “sustained, direct and aggressive diplomacy” to handle North Korea. He called for the strengthening of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the imposition of “strong international sanctions” against North Korea for any violation of United Nations resolutions. He even stated his belief that the United States needs a missile defense system to counter North Korea’s threat.

President Obama has warned that North Korea is a “grave threat” and said that he would “not tolerate” North Korea’s strategy of extracting rewards with belligerent behavior.

But beyond that, no amount of nuclear tests, missile tests, threats to rain a “fire shower of nuclear retaliation” on South Korea, or seized journalists has resulted in anything approaching a “strong sanction” or “sustained, direct, or aggressive diplomacy.” Again, Obama avoids disturbing the status quo.

• The Arab World. . .

The Arab world is a mess. The “good” countries are run by tyrannical dictators. The poorly run ones are run by the theologically insane. They support terrorism world wide and hate America for things we have never done and never will, and they use their hatred of America and claims of victimhood at our hands as a crutch to justify their own failures.

Candidate Obama told us that he was uniquely suited to travel to the Arab world and change this. Unlike honkus maximus, he could gain Arab sympathy. He was a fresh start, and that would let him set the record straight -- America has no interest in a crusade, he would proclaim, and all would be good.

President Obama traveled to Egypt, birth place of the Muslim Brotherhood (an old guard member of the terrorism fraternity) and home to a repressive Egyptian regime, and from his mouth did come the words: (and I paraphrase) “it’s not you. . . it’s us. We need to change. Give us time. Don’t do anything until I get back to you.” And thus, the status quo was preserved.

• Guantanamo Bay. . .

Candidate Obama promised to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and restore habeas corpus for the detainees before his rear hit the Oval chair. When President Obama learned this would cause problems, he opted for the status quo.

• Iraq. . .

Candidate Obama promised to “responsibly end the war in Iraq,” and to remove all U.S. troops by the end of 2009. President Obama plans to remove only “combat” troops, by the end of August 2010, though this will leave “30,000-50,000 troops in advisory roles.” Once again, he opts for the status quo.
Status Quo Ante

But what will Obama do when the genie has left the bottle and shattered the status quo? In that event, Obama’s policy becomes one of status quo ante -- the quest for the peace before. Thus, if you want to know which party Obama will support in any conflict, do not look for his stated principles, look to see who caused the issue to become of international interest, he will oppose that party.

• Iran. . .

Candidate Obama promised “tough, direct presidential diplomacy” with the Iranian regime to solve the misunderstanding that had vexed Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush. He extended his open hand, and Iran spit in it. Obama quietly slunk off.
Then in 2009, after a rigged election, the people of Iran flooded their streets in a budding revolution akin to those that crushed the tyrants of Eastern Europe. Obama, the human rights candidate, the man who thought he could solve everything with words, found himself strangely silent. Indeed, he barely raised a peep as the regime shielded the eyes of the outside world and crushed their own people.

Why did he not even speak out for the protection of these people? After all of his talk about human rights and supporting democracy around the world, would it not seem to make sense that he would support the people of Iran? I would, except that it was the people attempting to overturn their government that were disturbing the status quo. It was their actions, not the rigged elections, which brought this issue to a head as an international issues, rather than just an intranational issue. Thus, he remained silent in the hopes of restoring the comfort of the status quo ante.

• Honduras. . .

The final piece of the puzzle came last week. Obama sided with the repressive regimes in China and Iran, so giving a quick nod to a “military junta” should be no big deal. But it was. Why? What was different? This “junta” was disrupting the status quo.

By arresting Zelaya and throwing him out of the country, the Honduras Supreme Court and military elevated their dispute with President Zelaya from an intranational issue to an international issue. It did not matter that Zelaya acted illegally or that he provoked the incident, or that the Honduran government acted in accordance with the rule of law. . . they forced the issue to rise to the level where Obama had to become involved. Thus, he chose the side of Zelaya, in the hopes of restoring the status quo ante, so that he could return to ignoring the country.
Whether you call Obama’s policy supporting the current world order or the policy of hope for no change, it is clearly guided by a strong desire to avoid anything that disrupts the status quo. And as this becomes more and more obvious, look for foreign governments to learn that they can exploit his desire to vote present to extract amazing concessions.

Indeed, this week, India and Russia both proposed ending the dollar’s status as a reserve currency. Neither country is likely serious because the effects would be disastrous on the vast reserves of dollars they hold, but it will get concessions from Obama.

Russia is demanding the scrapping of the Eastern Europe missile defense system and the abandonment by NATO of Georgia and the Ukraine. North Korea wants money. And everybody else is getting their wish lists ready.

Bums Away--Obama Clears Gitmo

With the rebellion going on in Iran, North Korea going nuclear and threatening to launch a missile toward Hawaii, a possible confrontation on the high seas, and narco-war on our southern borders, let's concentrate on something truly important. We have to get those innocent victims of American oppression out of the Guantanamo Detention Center. For those with small screens, the legend on the cartoon reads "Releasing the Gitmo Inmates."

In attempting to keep one of his campaign promises, President Obama has sought out places to distribute the detritus of the battlefields of Jihadistan. So far, he has bribed the island of Palau to take some of the prisoners at a cost that could get you and your entire extended family a nice stay in the best hotels in the world for a couple of decades or so. And now, he is giving some more innocents a stay on the island of Bermuda. Bermuda is a member of the British Commonwealth, so naturally we used our finest diplomacy in informing our ally of the proposed move and gaining their consent before jetting the detainees to a favorite vacation site for New Yorkers, right? Wrong.

These detainees were not Arabs, nor did they expect to get 72 virgins for their efforts. They were "victims of Chinese oppression." And they claim they weren't making war on America, so why not release them to a beautiful resort in the Atlantic? There are a couple of small problems with that concept. These fine upstanding gentlemen are "Uighurs." China may have a small interest in "oppressing" them, since they are both Muslim and jihadist, and have been stirring up a little fun within China. They were captured on the battlefield as they were leaving their al Qaeda terrorist training camps in the section of Afghanistan still controlled by the resurgent Taliban. The whole "terrorist relocation program" is expected to run as much as $1 billion dollars (which is an administration estimate, and no doubt low by a factor of 2). That should help out with the economic crisis.

Since there has been absolutely no MSM negative reaction to the program, the administration sees no problem with moving forward on a program that could have waited, oh--say, five years. In fact, the MSM has been touting the Uighurs as harmless high-spirited gentlemen who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. We all know that foreign nationals frequently happen to wander into war zones by sheer happenstance. And since they are from China, it's somewhat of a mystery why the Chinese would not accept them back on their soil. Yeah, right. Basically, as usual, the MSM is simply parroting the talking points coming out of the White House. And after their arrival in Bermuda, the fun-loving Uighurs were pictured by the press body-surfing, fishing and generally having a grand time in the warm waters.

So watching that on our TVs is a little annoying for most of us, but at least the Brits have joined in the fun, haven't they? Well, the British, to put it mildly, are ticked. No diplomatic avenues were opened. No consent was asked or given. Neither the crown nor the governor of Bermuda was informed of the arrival of the guests until just before the plane touched down. There was also the American promise to the Uighurs of British citizenship, of which the British government knew nothing. The Brits are thrilled by the idea of British Muslim terrorists being free to move about the Commonwealth. After all, London doesn't have nearly enough fun-loving Muslims. Republicans are regularly accused by liberals of thinking they can buy their way out of anything. But even cowboy W. wouldn't have made the mistake of thinking that the only thing to come out of this arrogant act would be a large hotel bill.

Andrew Price did an excellent article on this a few days back. More information has come to us since that time, but the real story is the complete lack of interest the MSM has shown in another major diplomatic misfire by the Obama administration. Obama has lied and waffled on multiple promises to the American people, but he decided he would keep this promise to satisfy his leftist base, and to hell with national security or our relations with our oldest ally. And the MSM just keeps on pumping out cute photo stories about how much fun the Uighurs are having in the Bermuda surf.

This administration has spent countless hours, countless miles, and countless sums of money to assure that every diplomatic channel is opened and enhanced in the Muslim world. The MSM has hailed that as the arrival of the new Pax Americana headed by the greatest American since, well, ever. Bowing to the Saudi King is good diplomacy. Apparently, so is slapping the British Queen in the face--at least three times in less than a month.

And now the MSM is praising Obama for his finger-wagging "naughty naughty" message to the Iranian imams and the loathsome Ahmadenijad. But the MSM is also praising the President for his brilliant and forward-looking message being sent via Twitter. The glorification of form over substance has mesmerized the press and TV. At least now we'll get the Presidential propaganda hot off the presses since ABC has moved into the White House.

The Obama Administration--A Study In Split Personalities

While the President was busy in the Middle East playing peace envoy to the democracies and benevolent sheikdoms which practice the religion of peace, his Secretary of State was busy balancing the scales by going after China for human rights violations. Apparently, too much accomodationist footsy-playing is not going to be allowed in the Obama administration. At least not all at the same time.

In most administrations, Democrat or Republican, there is usually some coherent pattern of foreign diplomacy. Some administrations were very organized, others less so, but it was usually possible for the layman to pick a country, check its history, and come up with a pretty good guess as to what United States policy would be regarding that country at any given time. But just like Obama's domestic policy, there is no apparent method to their madness. In other words, if you don't like Obama's foreign policy, wait five minutes.

At the very time that the President was de-Christianizing America to prepare for future relations with our progressive brethren in greater Islamistan, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was sending dispatches to Beijing and making speeches demanding that China account and atone for the Tiananmen Square massacre. Not wishing to allow the Chinese leadership to mistake her serious intentions, she figured she might as well throw in a whole host of complaints about human rights violations to boot.

In the Middle East, the President seems to be oblivious to the fact that he is attempting to make nice-nice with primitives who want nothing more than to see us dead. Remember when The President in Independence Day asked the alien what he wanted from us? The alien replied, "I want you to die!" The alien was not as good at playing "deceive the dummy" as are the autocrats and theocrats in today's Middle East. Ahmedinajad might actually give an honest answer, though.

A murderous regime in Iran is now nuclear, or close to it. And it is working on better delivery systems to be aimed at Israel, Europe and eventually America. But for now, their capabilities are highly doubtful, and though dangerous, they do not as yet have the ability to vaporize most of humanity before rushing off to get their seventy-two virigins. Iraq is almost pacified, but the gay holocaust continues apace. Afghanistan is a military nightmare again, and the Taliban are resurgent there and in the unsecured regions of Pakistan. The perfect time for an American President to kiss the Koran, bow to the Saudi king, and throw his arms open to the wonderful world of wacky Islamists. Obama thinks that this is the time to talk peace, not to demonstrate American strength and resolve before it's too late.

Meanwhile, back at the giant pagoda in Beijing, there is a repressive regime which should be called to account for its ongoing human rights violations. An accounting is indeed long overdue, but I have to question both the timing and the intensity. After nineteen years, State suddenly couldn't wait a little longer? China is also the nation that owns a huge chunk of America's assets, is competing with us throughout the world in development and ally-collecting, and it is already nuclear and capable of delivering. And right now, the world is facing a North Korean madman, armed with rockets and at least some working nukes. Kim Jong Il is happy to produce delivery sytems for Iran while threatening nearby Japan and neighboring South Korea with nuclear annihilation.

China is perhaps the only nation in the world which would have any influence in getting North Korea to back down. So this is the perfect time to bitch-slap the Chinese leadership. China says that 241 people died at Tiananmen Square during the democracy demonstrations. Most western journalists and military experts place it closer to a thousand or more. A tragic but true fact remains. Those martyrs to freedom would not be any deader if our State Department had waited a little longer for a more opportune time to exercise America's moral disapproval.

Wang Dan, a top Chinese student leader at Tiananmen who spent seven years in prison for his activities and now runs anti-government websites from American soil says: "The Chinese government eventually will have to face the past." He also expressed surprise that Secretary Clinton chose this very time to demand it. Today, June 4, is the twentieth anniversary of the massacre. An auspicious day, of course. But a good day to tick off the only half-friendly government of any importance in mainland Asia beside South Korea? Not to my mind.

I seriously wonder if the President was even warned in advance that Clinton would take this action. With The One out of the country, it would not surprise me if it turned out that the much-ignored Secretary saw an opportunity to get back into the limelight. Or perhaps she simply got her advice from the Vice President who garbled his instructions from the President. Obama may have told Biden to have Clinton ask for China's help, and Biden delivered the message as "Tell China to go to hell."

The Republican party may be in disarray, but at least it can't be blamed for the current policy of sailing the Ship of State around in circles.
