As if New Yorkers don't have enough to worry about, now this? Yes folks, there was near panic in Chelsea this week. And no, it wasn't Carl Paladino shooting his mouth off again, or even anything to do with Al Sharpton. This time it was... a UFO! Yes, you read that right. On Wednesday October 13 at around 3pm, a UFO was sighted hovering over Chelsea...see for yourself, if you don't believe me.
Okay, before you panic, this time it turned out to be a bunch of metallic balloons that escaped a childrens' party, but this isn't the first time a UFO has been sighted over New York City. Don't get me wrong. I believe in the possibility of other, more advanced life forms out there, but I really doubt that space aliens are going to land in broad daylight in midtown Manhattan in the middle of a sunny afternoon. If they are truly intelligent lifeform, they would know that Mayor Bloomberg would be forced to levy a hefty commuter tax or just ban them outright because space aliens flying around midtown Manhattan can't possibly be good for anyone's health! But then again, we are a designated Sanctuary City...
Anyway, this got me to thinking about a public access T.V. talk show I saw years ago. The host and a guest were having a very sincere discussion (at 3am) about how good and benevolent space aliens from beyond the Plaeides were on their way to Earth and would be landing around 2012 purportedly to save us from some other bad space aliens who were on their way to Earth to destroy us. I am not sure how the guest obtained this information, but I seem to remember human/alien hybrid babies and bodily probing may have been involved!
So, here's a Commentarama Probing (tee-hee) Question: What do you think President Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and/or Harry Reid will do if/when the space aliens land in 2012?

This is my reply from last week in case you didn't see it:
I'm sure I'll become cynical and jaded one day but I'm still having fun and, truthfully, I never want to lose what I call my "tourist mode." I'm sure the natives avoid it like the plague but I still like walking around Times Square, seeing all the tourists react in wonder, just like I did when I first visited NYC about ten years ago.
(By the way, the new Pop-Tarts shop is worth visiting at least once. Interesting deserts they have though it's really all about the presentation and merchandise.)
Let's see... in Northern NJ, they cut Light Rail service on the weekends from Tonnelle Ave. to Hoboken Terminal, so I have to take it to Newport, then hitch a ride on the Light Rail going the other way back to Hoboken. Not the worst thing ever but I'll be happier when I don't have to use it! :-)
And I'm embarking on a career in voice-over. I just recorded my demo last week at Engine Room Audio (42 Broadway) and it turned out pretty good! It's all in the early stages though a friend of mine bought me a nice mic so I can audition from home.
And today I went to the NY Comic-Con. One word: CROWDED!! I've been to the San Diego Comic-Con and, dare I say it, this was just as big. I resisted the urge to buy anything but I did get a nice peak at some upcoming Star Wars books and the Alien Blu-Ray set (in alien egg packaging). I also took in a couple of panels - cool stuff.
And here's my reply for this week...
My friend told me about the UFOs but I wasn't in the city that day (and I'm usually only in Chelsea when I see shows at the UCB).
As for what Obama and Co. would do in the event of a UFO, alien invasion, etc., just watch Mars Attacks!
"I want the people to know that they still have two out of three branches of government working for them and that ain't bad!" :-)
I'm sure that committees and studies and assurances that they've been on this since day one will abound.
Bev: That's an easy answer. The Obamas would welcome their fellow extraterrestrials to earth--then register them as Democrats. Citizenship optional.
I really doubt that space aliens are going to land in broad daylight in midtown Manhattan in the middle of a sunny afternoon.
What do you mean, Bev?
SPACE ALIENS ALWAYS LAND in Central Park at noon. Did you miss "The Day the Earth Stood Still" - or the remake of the same name?
I think that ET landed in the burbs, but he/it was sort of a lame alien and may have missed Central Park due to a navigation error.
Bev, I guess it depends on why they're here. If they ain't too bright, they'll land in Iran or the worst parts of Chicago... or Newark, and that will be the end of that.
If they're here for fun, they'll land in Vegas.
If they're into nostalgia, they'll land in Roswell.
If they're into film, they'll land in Wyoming... Devil's Tower.
And if they're smart, they'll land where the leader of the free world resides. . . where ever that may be.
As for what Obama will do, I'm betting there will be a lot of bowing, he'll try to get them registered to vote, he'll hand them an i-pod, and then he'll hand over Biden as a sacrifice. . . in exchange for a couple days at some universal 5 supernova hotel.
Okay, so Texas beat the Yankees, so it's 1-1. YEY!
Texas beat Nebraska 20-13 YEYx2
Now that that is out of the way...
ScottD: When I first moved to NYC, I spent alot of time in Time Square area too. Mainly because it was the area of NYC that I was most familiar with and felt most comfortable. Now it's my least favorite because of the tourists. Screw their wonder, just get out of my way ;-)
I've actually gone by the Pop Tart Store, but it's been closed. You should try Dylan's Candy Bar on 60th and 3rd Ave. Every candy known to mankind!
Oh and Scott: I was thinking Mars Attacks too...EEK!
Tam: Because Obama is always so prepared, he probably has a committee or two working on the problem right now. It's one of his "shovel-ready" projects. Of course now the he has finally admitted there is no such thing as a "shovel-ready" project...well...we now know what we needed the shovel for, if you know what I mean.
LawHawk: And he'll probably make them ET Czars too!
LL: I am sorry, I forgot aliens tend to land in Central Park. Actually though, I have it on good authority that that is where the "black helicopters" land every night to store the nuclear weapons, so the aliens will probably have to find some other place if they ever really do come. There's always Brooklyn...
Andrew: Not even the aliens would be stupid enough to take Biden!
Bev -
I've been to Dylan's. :-) The first time I went there, I had just had a Subway sub and was subsequently unable to finish the gigantic s'mores cupcake I purchased. I usually wolf down treats in no time but this cupcake... all I could do was look at it for 20 minutes, and then I just hollowed it out from the top.
Sorry, but everyone who watches Dr. Who KNOWS that the aliens will land in London, not NYC. Sorry, Bev. ;)
And also -- did someone say PopTart SHOP?????
Phew! You're right. It will be London, I forgot. Now I can rest easy. And yes, there is an entire store devoted to Pop-Tarts in NYC. Also, Hershey's Kisses and M&M's too!
