Question: Turkey Day Memories. . .

Tell us what you like most about Thanksgiving? What are your favorite memories? What are your favorite foods? Did anyone else watch the MST3k Turkey Day marathons when they were on?

Andrew: I don't know if I can single one out, but there have been two or three where we had the whole bloody extended family there. Two turkeys and tons of trimmings. They were like German/Irish summit meetings, but the good kind. Great fun, great food, and a sense of gratitude for what we had been given.

Favorite food? Turkey, turkey and more turkey. I could eat turkey sandwiches through Christmas and never tire of them. The big battle was the Kernaghan side of the family with the crushed cranberries versus the Hawk side of the family with cranberry jelly. I want my cranberries without seeds and stems, thank you very much.

thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because the expectation is on the food and not much else. it's also the gateway drug to the christmas frenzy...which i love. there's also the fond memory of participating in a touch football game (in my 40's no less) and forgetting about the touch part. i tackled an unsuspecting younger male cousin who had the misfortune of running past me with the ball. is there anything more satisfying that a brute thanksgiving take-down?!

We've always had two Thanksgivings - one on mom's side and one on dad's... not because the two sides of the family don't get along (they do) but because it would be a logistical challenge.

With my mom's parents' declining health, usually mom and dad (and me and/or my brother if available) would go to their place, having stopped to pick up some turkey along the way OR to Applebee's (which is where my parents are meeting them tomorrow).

My dad's side... the running joke every year is that we're all gluttons and we finish Thanksgiving dinner in 20 minutes. Seriously, I recall still eating my turkey and they were serving coffee already!

In 2007, I had Thanksgiving with some married friends and the wife's parents. After dinner, we were sitting in the living room and I thought to myself, "What are we doing? In my family, we'd be eating dessert already! What is this strange intermission we're having?" :-)

Patti, that's hilarious! LOL!

We usually make prime rib or duck. Lately, we've been trying to perfect Alton Brown's fudge recipe -- very difficult, but very rewarding when you get it right!

When I was in law school, my sister and I used to watch the MST3k marathon -- great stuff!

I was raised by my Grandparents through the ‘60s in South Georgia and Thanksgiving was a big event. My Grandmother would start preparing, and cooking a week in advance. Our house was a true Victorian, and the wonderful smell wafting through the old home was magical, everything from scratch. I licked many a mixing bowl of the cake batter, and icings. Me and my two brothers were her official tasters. Turkeys, hams, venison, pies, cakes, and on and on. Everybody was alive, and everybody was there. There were two foods there however, I didn’t like then, and still don’t like today, gelatin salads, or anything with a sweet potato, yuk! As a Southerner not liking sweet potatoes are a kind of heresy, oh well!

I played football for Haverford High School and Thursdays morning, 10:00 a.m. we always played our traditional rival, Upper Darby. Great memories. Turkey rules, of course, but I do love the squash bisque made from acorn and butternut squash.

Favorite memories: The smells from my mother's kitchen and Monopoly and/or Yahtzee marathons with the family.

Favorite food: My mother's mashed potatoes. Absolutely the best.

T-giving pretty much means Velveeta & Salsa and chips to me.

Perhaps oddly, I have very few memories of T-giving as a child. I remember more of them in college or as a single adult with my friends.

I love to cook, though, so it's one of my favorite holidays when I get to host.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Commentarama-ites!
