Commentarama Polls: PreElection Impression

Ok, let’s do a couple of polls to see how the Commentarama community is feeling about things. Don’t forget to leave comments below explaining your votes or just telling us rude things about our heritage. (And don't forget to join us election night for our version of coverage!)

Obviously, the Star Trek v. Star Wars question is the most vital to our Democracy. ;-)

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

Yes, but I was wondering why you didn't add FireFly to the list.

My vote for Star Wars is only for the original 3 - the last 3 don't count in my book.

That was the hardest question to answer. I didn't care for the original Star Trek series, but with all the movies and spinoff shows it's grown on me.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I thought about expanding it to include a bunch of SciFi, but this didn't seem the time or place. Maybe in the future!

AndrewPrice said...

TJ, I only think of the first three when I think of "Star Wars" as well. The other three are like a Sci-Fi channel knock off.

CrispyRice said...

Only on Commentarama, a blog based on politics, does the last question create the most discussion, LOL!

For the record, I too voted based on the 1st 3 Star Wars movies only. (Were there more?? Can't think of them, hmmm.) But I'm the opposite of TJ for Star Trek - love Kirk, and I put up with the rest. :D

And you need to add to the poll - Will Hillary run on her own against Obama?? Magic 8 Ball says "Assuredly So!"

AndrewPrice said...

Crispy, I will try to remember the Magic 8 Ball feature for the next poll! LOL!

I agree about Star Trek, Kirk won me over, the rest road his coattails.

Speaking of Magic 8 balls, by the way, here's the last time we consulted one of those: A Link

I'd like to be more optimistic than cautiously optimistic, but I'm 1) a Republican and 2) superstitious and don't want to jinx things through hubris.

I voted for Star Trek since it (and I) are the real deal originals. Seriously, I have gone back and watched the Star Wars Trilogy and the acting actually sucks. It did, however, introduce us to Douglas Trumble (?)s special effects, taking space to a whole new frontier.

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, I would like to be optimistic too, but like you, I've been a Republican too long to ever expect the best from our party!

In terms of acting, I think Shatner is vastly underrated in the Jim Kirk role. People have unfairly poked at him for years, when he actually played the role perfectly. And the other guys did a great job too.

I won't say the acting stunk in Star Wars, but I would agree that they would probably do it differently today -- more subtle.

i am very uncertain if the repubs "get it" like they assure us they do. i see very little evidence.

star wars, eh.

star trek, eh.

i do love shatner though. just looking at the dude cracks me up.

Speaking of PreElection impressions.

This is the live stream of Coons and O'Donnell debate. Interesting so far.

I will gladly bring the virtual martini pitchers to the Commentarama coverage on election night.

BevfromNYC said...

Writer X: Do we only get to drink virtual martinis? And will you use virtual gin or vodka? Just checking...

BTW - The 32nd miner is about to surface. Anyone who says that NASA is a waste of money is full of...well...you know what! Chi, Chi, Chi, Le, Le, Le...CHILE!!!!

BevfromNYC said...

Patti,
"i am very uncertain if the repubs "get it" like they assure us they do. i see very little evidence."

This is when the Republican Party is going to get their rude awakening (shock and awe!) - the Tea Party movement is NOT just about Democrat policies. If they don't tow the line, we will be all up in their faces too!

BevfromNYC said...

UPDATE: The last Chilean miner is in the pod and about to surface! YEY!!!!!

Writer X said...

Bev,

I will be bringing bottomless vodka, gin, and blue cheese olives. And pretty martini glasses.

BevfromNYC said...

Writer X: My fantasy...a bottomless martini, straight up with a twist! Nov 2 can't get here fast enough!

Tennessee Jed said...

Andrew- you are probably right. "stunk" may be too strong. Pedstrian is probably more descriptive although some of the dialogue between Luke and Leah really is incredibly wooden at times.

I really enjoyed watching a young Shatner in 1960 guest starring in an episode of Thriller. Basically, his character had a nervous breakdown on camera. Awesome acting, although you could foresee many "Kirk like" elements portrayed.

Tennessee Jed said...

Writer X and Bev - I expect, depending on how the night goes, to be breaking out some very expensive wine and perhaps a cigar. It is a dirty rotten capitalist pig thing, and it most assuredly won't be virtual

Guys,

I watched the Coons vs O'Donnell debate. I stopped when the students started to ask questions. The video-taped questions. None were asked from the crowd, nor were they about economics, just social questions slanted to the left.

O'Donnell held her own. Coons got a little condescending. The moderators acted more like Spanish Inquisitors looking for witches. Through it all, O'Donnell held her own.

She also got a clear slam against Coons when he talked about the many SNL skits against her. She said he was just jealous that he wasn't in any of them.

The media set the bar very low for O'Donnell. Which makes it a clear win for O'Donnell for people looking for a train wreck. It didn't happen.

T_Rav said...

I wanted to go with more than 46-55, but I decided to play it safe. If we can get either CA or WA, though, I do think we can reach 51 in the Senate.

By the way, did anyone else notice that CNN cut off the live feed in the middle of the debate? Does that mean O'Donnell won?

T_Rav said...

Oh, and Star Wars, hands down. I don't even have to think about it.

AndrewPrice said...

Sorry I wasn't around tonight everyone, I was out of town. . . but now I'm back! So what's been going on? ;-)

AndrewPrice said...

Patti, You've got to love Shatner. . . it's the law!

AndrewPrice said...

Writer X, You supply the virtual martinis and we'll supply the virtual bar. . . and the public can supply the drama! :-)

Bev, A bottomless virtual martini. . . LOL! I wonder what the glass would look like? Maybe it's something created by M.C. Escher?

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, Good for them. Though I have to ask -- NASA? I haven't followed the story enough to have heard about their involvement?

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, Nothing wrong with a capitalist celebration! :-)

The first Shatner I recall before Star Trek was the two Twilight Zones he did. I thought he did a great job. Of course, I thought he brought the right amount of everything to Kirk too. Without his acting, that character would never have become so much larger than life!

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, Let's hope. I didn't see the debate as I was out of town this evening, but there is an old axiom to consider, and that is that people rally around someone is being attacked on all side -- especially when those attacks are personal in nature.

I'm still in the category of just not seeing it, but I can't rule anything out in this election cycle and I will be pulling for her. Let's hope this is the first major surprise of November 2!

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I didn't see the debate, but in this day and age it would not surprise me if CNN decided to cancel their coverage if it didn't go the way they wanted.

I honestly have no idea about California or Washington. Both are very left-leaning states, but both seem to be leaning about as far right as they are likely to ever lean at the moment. So anything could happen.

I tend to think we won't get the majority in the Senate, but I wouldn't put money on that.

Star Wars seems to be pull away with the votes. For Star Trek to pull this out, some "Enterprising" Star Trek fan will need to place the link to this poll on a Trekkie website! LOL!

(P.S. Just kidding, don't do that anyone -- that's cheating!)

Joel Farnham said...

This is the whole debate. Like I said, I watched until the children came on and asked their questions.

Interesting debate.

DUQ said...

Call me "cautiously optimistic" about the whole thing.

AndrewPrice said...

Sorry about the disappearing polls guys, but the polling site went down this morning and was killing our website, so I took the article off line until they fixed their problems.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I don't see any articles this morning about how horrible she did, so the media must have decided there's nothing they can attack.

AndrewPrice said...

DUQ, I'm am cautiously optimistic about the whole thing as well.

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

If they did show it, the underscore would have been how bad Coons showed and how good O'Donnell did.

Truthfully, to me, she is okay, nothing really to write home about. One deer in the headlights moment for O'Donnell, several "I don't know what she is talking about.", yet it is obvious what she is talking about moments for Coons.

I generally don't watch debates. Too wonky for me. She cleanly articulated conservative points. Coons clearly is a well-polished politician with all the "right" talking points.

If it was over a more important position, say President or Vice, there would be people like Karl Rove saying, "Oops, my bad."

I can't gauge how women will take it with Coons saying, "I don't know what she is talking about." Some are clearly pissed about the condescension.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, Sending condescension signals is always bad, so that will hurt him. It's one thing to point out your opponents flaws, it's another to make fun of them.

I rarely watch debates myself because they are depressing. It usually just serves to remind me how stupid, ignorant and incompetent our political class really is. That's why seeing a guy like Reagan was such a joy -- he actually knew what he believed and was great at explaining it.

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

I really wished you had saw the debate. If anything it served to dispell any thought that O'Donnell is a ditz.

Look for SNL to do a skit.

Pittsburgh Enigma said...

Joel: Coons reminds me a lot of Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, a man only dimly aware of his own existence. He is the classic example of an empty suit full of talking points. Rick Santorum kicked his butt in all the debates, but the Democrat wave swept in Casey anyway. Let's hope the Republican wave sweeps in O'Donnell.

Joel Farnham said...

Pitt,

He reminds me of James Carville without the accent. Was there a cloning machine a few years ago? Slap a thick gumbo accent on Coons and a little animation and you get Carville.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, That's funny! Of course, the prospect of a cloning machine turning out Democrats is pretty horrific actually. . . but it would explain Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movies!

(I'll try to watch the debate later, I'm kind of swamped at the moment.)

AndrewPrice said...

Pitts, In many states, I think turn out enthusiasm and voter registration advantages are all that matter. I think PA is one of those states. That's why I think Santorum went down, and why I think Toomey will win this time.

Ed said...

I don't see Pelosi keeping the leadership, but I do see Obama running again no matter how bad things go in this election.

AndrewPrice said...

Ed, There is reason to think Obama doesn't want to run again, particularly that Michelle Obama apparently hates living in the White House. But I think his ego will make him run.

Ed said...

When did you hear Mrs. Luxury Vacation doesn't like the White House?
