With Friends Like These. . .

It’s been a slow news summer, with the exception of one or two HUGE items. . . but how many times can we talk about Justin Beiber’s new album? ;) So let’s do a couple small items, then we can all get back to preparing for tryanmax's and T-Rav's birthdays!

Silly Gays: You know that gays think with their genitalia, right? At least, that’s what Joy Behar tells us. She’s upset that a group of gay Republicans have endorsed Romney. More specifically, she questions their motives. She actually suggested that GOProud only endorsed Romney because they’re attracted to his sons:

“Could it be that the GOProud guys are just attracted to Mitt Romney's sons Matt, Mutt, Tag, Tip, Tack, and Bashful? Do you think that's the issue?”
No doubt she'll claim this was a joke, but could you imagine the outrage if a Republican suggested (even as a joke) that gays only voted for Obama because they were attracted to his children? Gays should be insulted because here is a prominent (idiot) liberal suggesting that they think through their sex organs. This woman is a mess.

Brother Can You Spare A Stadium?: The Democrats are running so low on money that they are thinking of cancelling the opening kickoff to their convention in North Carolina. At the least, they apparently plan to move it to a smaller venue. Ha ha. This is despite Obama supposedly being prepared to raise a billion dollars, despite the unions being flush with billions in stimulus money, despite Hollywood emptying their pockets to help out. Where did it all go wrong? Oh, that's right, they proved to be idiots and everyone knows they’re going to lose!

Speaking of Hollywood, it looks like Obama is starting to skip the fundraisers they are doing for him. Apparently, it doesn’t fit with his manufactured image of “caring about normal people.”

Fleeing A Sinking Convention: In a sign of how bad the PR is for the Democrats at the moment, Missouri Democrat (and neighbor of Mr. T. Rav) Sen. Claire McCaskill will apparently skip the convention. She gets added to a growing list of other Democrats who fear that being seen at that toxic venue will cause them problems with the voters. This list includes the Clintons and the West Virginia delegation. This is a bad, bad sign for Obama. When your friends don’t want to be seen with you, you know you’re in trouble.

Patriotism Is The Last Refuge of Short Scoundrels: Clinton Labor Secretary and noted dwarf Robert Reich just said that Republicans aren’t patriots because we don’t want to pay taxes. Specifically, he said this: “True patriotism means paying for America.” This is interesting, since Republicans actually are the ones who are paying. Democrats don’t work, they leech, be they Democratic billionaires who avoid their taxes and demand federal subsidies for their business (cough cough Warren Buffett) or be they the army of Democratic voters who live on welfare and demand subsidies for everything they buy from their homes, to their student loans, to their heating fuel, to their food, to their kids’ school lunches. So using Reich’s formula, it turns out that Republicans are true patriots and Democrats aren’t. But then, we knew that already.

No Habla Liberalismo: So get this, we all KNOW that Hispanics only care about immigration, right? That’s what we’re told by the left. Well, it turns out that’s not true. USA/Gallup just did a poll and it turns out that Hispanics care most about. . . get this. . . healthcare (21%), then unemployment (19%) and then comes immigration at 12%. Imagine that, they’re just like the rest of us.

No One Could Have Known!: As usual, The Economist is slowly discovering what conservatives already knew. When the Arab Spring hit, The Economist went all giddy. They saw visions of westernized-socialist Arab diplomats taking over these countries and turning them into mini-Greeces. They dismissed anyone who suggested that things might not go so well. Arabs didn't really want fundamentalist Islam, we were assured. Well, now that Egypt has had its elections, The Economist has discovered to its horror that the same people who demand the destruction of Israel, who persecute Christians, and who murder their wives for no reason whatsoever, didn’t make the wisest choices as voters after all. Shocking. The selection of the Muslim Brotherhood candidate is not as bad as people fear, but The Economist has gone into full panic mode and is now wondering how nobody could have seen this coming. . . just like all liberals do when their fantasies implode.

Anything you'd like to add?

I supported and still support the Arab Spring, but I pity anyone who labored under the delusion that democracy would magically Westernize the Arab world.

I'm going to quote an old post of mine from 17 months ago.

I don't labor under the delusion that we won't butt heads with the new governments, but Islamists in presidential palaces make very different calculations than Islamists in secret caves. Look at the difference between the PLO and Hamas before they attained power and consider the fact that our deadliest enemy isn't a nation-state, but Al Queda.

BevfromNYC said...

However Anthony, as Egypt goes, so goes Israel.

BevfromNYC said...

In other news, Charlie Rangel won his 3 way Primary in his district last night. I shake my head in wonder.

Anthony said...

Bev,

Rangel winning isn't a shock, though its worth noting that more people voted against him than for him (Rangel had four opponents and even then he only beat his most popular opponent by 5 points).

I don't understand your 'as Egypt goes, so goes Israel' statement given that one was a secular dictatorship and the other is a democracy.

As I've noted in the past, the Arab world's secular dictators have always played a cynical game, suppressing all non-Islamic civil society and stirring up popular hatred of the US and Israel in order to A) keep the people focused on things other than the government B) create Islamic terrorists oriented on the West (its worth noting the 9/11 attackers included 4 Egyptians) and C) convince anti-authoritarian Western countries they were necessary evils.

I'm glad Barron lost. Hopefully he'll sink into relative obscurity (I understand he is a high profile guy in NY, but I'd never heard of him until recently) and not get a gig on Fox News.

"No One Could Have Known!" ????

Horse Mess! Anyone who bothered to read beyond the headlines and sentient enough to remember events in Iran in 1978 - 1979 knew exactly what would become of the Arab Spring. This debacle was entirely predictable, a foregone conclusion and is the sole responsibility of the idiots now in charge of U.S. and European foreign policy.

Heck of a job nitwits!

AndrewPrice said...

Anthony, I actually support the Arab Spring too. I think it is a necessary step for these countries eventually becoming like the rest of the world. Mistakes will be made, no doubt, but in the longer term, I think this is a good thing.

I also don't think the Muslim Brotherhood is nearly as dangerous as people think. They've become the respected opposition in other countries like Jordan and they've shown themselves to be much more moderate than people expected and much more interested in genuinely running a country rather than creating a crusade. And when movements become responsible for governing the always get more moderate because revolutionary spirit doesn't get the garbage picked up or the people fed. So I'm not worried.

But the Economist got obnoxious months back, talking about how the Arab people would now embrace these diplomats who had spent their lives in Europe and would lead them to becoming just like European countries, and they scoffed at anyone who said the people really were interested in fundamentalist Islam. So now they're in a panic that things didn't turn out as expected.

Something on Egypt to ponder: It could lead to Israel feeling that it has been backed into a corner. One need only remember nation's "Win or Die" mentality to realize that when Israel thinks it has been backed into corner things get messy. Just look at June '67.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, That's true. Those two seem particularly linked. But Israel doesn't seem worried. I think they know that the Egyptian military has no intentions of joining a holy war and I would guess they also see the Muslim Brotherhood as much more moderate (like I do) than most people. If the Salafists had won, I would bet Israel would be acting differently now.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, Guys like Rangel just don't lose... too many years of giving favors.

We got lucky here. We've got a guy called Doug Lamborn. He's a solid conservative, but he skipped some event with Obama in protest and that got people upset. So we had this liberal guy challenge him in the primary while claiming to be a genuine conservative. He got a lot of endorsements from people who should have known better and it looked like he would win. He got stomped! 69% - 31% :)

AndrewPrice said...

Anthony, That's actually the reason we have such problems with the Arab world. Since at least the 1950s, whenever things have gone wrong in any Arab country, the dictators/princes in charge have blamed a conspiracy of Americans and Jews for causing it... everything. Famines, lack of jobs, military failures, the "need" to round people up and torture them have all been blamed on us by our enemies and our friends. That is the real reason average Arabs are so upset and why so many are willing to join terrorist groups.

Hopefully, as these countries free themselves from the dictators we've supported in the past, they will not be unable to keep seeing us as the cause of their problems.

AndrewPrice said...

Anthony, I don't really know Barron, but from my perspective, anything which keeps a corrupt bastard like Rangel as a high profile representative of the Democrats is good. It's the same with Pelosi, I want her to never lose. I want her as the face of their party for the next 1,000 years if that were possible.

AndrewPrice said...

Libertarian Advocate, But this is how liberals so often do it -- especially in the MSM. They can't get over the idea that everyone thinks like they do, so once the outside pressure (e.g. US dictator) is gone, they expect people to suddenly spring up and become just like they are.

I honestly do think the Economist staff really expected that all the talk of Islam was just puffery, meant to excite people but never meant to be taken seriously. And now that the people have shown a willingness to follow through, they simply can't understand how this could have happened.

It's the same thing with France. During the election, the liked Hollande with the understanding that his platform was just meant to score political points -- they even kept saying that, that they didn't believe him. Now that he's shown he's serious about implementing it (shorter work week, 75% tax break), the Economist is acting a bit surprised and scared that he could really have meant what he promised.

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, That's true except that I see no evidence Israel is worried about that, or that the Egyptian military will support and attack (or is capable of carrying one out). For the next few years, I think Egypt will be caught in a power struggle between the military and the civilian government.

AndrewPrice said...

And Kit (and Bev) keep in mind that Israel's two biggest threats (Egypt and Syria) militarily speaking have both been neutered in this Arab Spring. So Israel just got an order of magnitude stronger and safer. The only real danger right now is a nuclear Iran.

BevfromNYC said...

I believe that even Al Sharpton limits his involvment with Charles Barron, but he is on the City Counsel probably forever. All you have to know is that Barron was endorsed by David Duke**, former Grand Wizard of the KKK. Go figure. Since they both are openly and vocally Anti-Semitic, I guess that outweighed Duke's KKK'ness to Barron. I guess it falls into the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" catagory.

(**Not to be confused with the very fine actor - David Dukes)

AS skeptical as I am about Morsi being a moderate or even his ascension being good for the Middle East, this might give me some good feelings of hope: CNN: "Egypt's new president to pick woman, Christian VPs

First it was said by Ahmed Deif, a Policy Advisor for Morsi, in an interview with CNN.

Good News: A woman might not mean much, simply making them look good. But the Christian is a different matter.
-He said Egypt will "not be an Islamic Republic".
-According to the man

Bad News (or reasons to still be pessimistic)
-It was said by a Policy Advisor, not the President.
-The new Egyptian leadership might be trying to save face.

I'm still pessimistic about Egypt. The main thing I hope for is that they keep the 79 Treaty.

Kit said...

I think Israel is concerned about the change in government. They are the most hated country in the region and a guy affiliated with a group that has never been to fond of Israel has just come to power. Hence, this:
JPOST: "Barak warns Egyptian regime on terror from Sinai"

"I think they know that the Egyptian military has no intentions of joining a holy war" and "That's true except that I see no evidence Israel is worried about that, or that the Egyptian military will support and attack (or is capable of carrying one out)."

I might agree on that. I think the military might be a moderating influence on the more Radical elements in the government. At least I hope it will.

Americans tend to think of the military as an arm of the government, something totally under its control (Thank you, George Washington!). But in most countries its more of a branch, one that must be appeased.

Bev, David Dukes (non-actor) is a turd. That was an embarrassment when he ran as a Republican.

I don't know much about Barron, but I guess antisemitism sells in NYC?

BevfromNYC said...

Egypt has been "neutered" how? For decades, Israel and Egypt have lived in relative harmony under a long standing treaty which is now very much in doubt. And Syria is in a state of civil war and apparently with Turkey. Israel may not be openly showing signs of distress, but you can bet that they are putting all of their military capabilities on full alert and at the ready. Especially since our own WH seems to take great pleasure in outing Israel as the source of virus' in Iran.

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, If I had to put money on it, I would say that Egypt is on the right course to become like Turkey. They seem to have the same internal power structure right now -- a powerful military which can destroy the government, but can't really control the country on its own, plus a civilian government which is balancing between a desire to fix the country, keep the military from killing them, and keep the Islamists happy. That seems to have worked to create a peaceful Republic in Turkey and I think it will ultimately work out here.

From what I've read, the Muslim Brotherhood really is about governing and not turning the country into a theocracy. That could change now that they are in power, but I'm betting it won't. I'm betting that once they become responsible for the day to day lives of 80 million people, they will get even more technocratic and less dogmatic.

The real danger is the Salafists who can continue to fight for fundamentalist Islam without having to worry about any of the consequences.

T-Rav said...

Somebody should have asked Behar if she thinks with her penis.

I really think SNL had it more right than they knew when they had her portrayed by Fred Armisen in drag.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, Egypt has been neutered in two ways. First, for years now, their military has been falling further behind technologically and funding-wise. They've lost a lot of American aid and support in the past five years and it's worn down their capabilities significantly. So right now they are no match at all for Israel.

Secondly, they no longer have unity. What their people want and what their military want are in direct conflict. That makes it nearly impossible for them to act effectively. That dramatically reduces the threat to Israel.

I'm not saying everything is unicorns and rainbows, but what I am saying is that a war 10 years ago could have threatened Israel's existence. Today, Egypt would get crushed in short order -- ditto Syria.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, I didn't see that, but it sure sounds about right! LOL!

As for thinking with her penis, maybe, except I would challenge the idea she thinks.

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, That's the thing to keep in mind. The Egyptian military's primary concern right now and into the foreseeable future will be its own survival and controlling the people of Egypt. It cannot afford a costly (and futile) war with anyone right now.

Could it sponsor terrorists? I suppose so, but why would it? That would again take away its focus from its new mission and might cause a backlash from Israel which would risk exposing it as a paper tiger.

Notawonk said...

I saw a poll piece that Matt Lauer talked about this morning. It showed that Barry still leads! That Romney's ick factor is up! That while it's so close, it ain't *that* close.

AndrewPrice said...

BTW, if anyone is interested in the fire, I posted some comments about it last night HERE. Not much has changed overnight, except that it's still 100% out of control, more neighborhoods have been evacuated, the air is putrid, they are again expecting 65 mph winds. :(

AndrewPrice said...

Patti, I wouldn't believe any of these polls. The MSM is trying to create a peer pressure environment, but it won't work. I think people have started to question the validity of polls generally.

Kit said...

If the Muslim Brotherhood behaves more moderate I will be happy, but I'm not that optimistic.

Still, news stories such as this and this.

there is also this CNN editorial which shows the Brotherhood has never been good on keeping its word.

DUQ said...

Bev, Not to speak for Andrew, but I don't think he meant there is no danger anymore. I think he meant that the military danger of being invaded is gone for the moment.

DUQ said...

I think it's great the Democrats are struggling with this convention. Out of cash and out of friends is the way I like to think of them.

Does anybody know what McCaskill's chances are of winning re-election?

T-Rav said...

DUQ, at the risk of counting the chickens before they hatch, McCaskill is done. The polls have consistently shown her losing to all her Republican challengers, sometimes by double digits. It's not a race that can be taken for granted, but as long as the GOP keeps its game face on, she's toast. I think my fellow Show Me Staters will remember her arrogant behavior and Obama sycophancy while the debate over ObamaCare was going on.

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, I don't understand what's wrong with the news stories? The guy is actually saying all the right things? He's saying the country needs to come together, won't be an Islamic democracy, will represent everyone, wants to make peace with the military. I don't know if he really means it, but it sounds like the things you would hope he would say?

The editorial is rather weak. It strikes me as a conclusion looking for support, and even then doesn't seem to really have a conclusion other than "maybe." The biggest thing Ghitis latched onto is that they have taken power when they originally said they would act more slowly. That's not quite like promising to forswear violence and then killing people. Yet, that seems to be what she's latching onto to be worried about them. And even then, she points out that they need to fear (1) angry voters who have already abandoned them, (2) the military, and (3) the loss of western aid. All of that really suggests they won't go full retard.

AndrewPrice said...

DUQ, That is what I meant. I don't mean all dangers have ended. I just mean that the two biggest threats Israel faced (the two which could have ended its existence -- the Syrian military and the Egyptian military) are effectively finished.

The threats now are nuclear from Iran and terrorist from everywhere else.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, Let's hope so. Every poll I've seen shows her in a lot of trouble and I get the feeling Missouri is simply ready for a change, and I think ObamaCare was the straw which broke that particular camel. Staying away from the convention won't help.

P.S. No comment on being her neighbor? ;)

Kit said...

Nothing wrong with the news stories, in fact, I'd list them as potential good news.

But I'm still concerned he is playing to the West.

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, Ah, ok, I misread your comment. Sorry about that.

And don't get me wrong, I take nothing on faith... ever. So until we've seen years of solid, good governance, I will remain skeptical. But I think there is a solid basis for hope that they will head in the right direction.

T-Rav said...

Andrew, the STL Post-Dispatch had an article up over the weekend explaining that Missouri is no longer the bellwether state it once was. It bucked the trend by just barely going Republican in '08 (something I and my 13,000 phone calls take partial credit for), and it's been consistently right-leaning in every poll since. Thanks to out-migration from KC and STL, I think we've finally reached a point where the rural and suburban areas are able to overmatch those big blue urban areas most of the time.

On a more humorous note, the GOP ads here lately have been referring to "ObamaCare" as "ObamaClaire." She's yoked to his administration, and trying to pose as an independent by not going to the convention won't save her.

T-Rav said...

As for being her neighbor....I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that it may incriminate me. ;-)

Unknown said...

I think I'll go to the Democratic convention. There's nothing like going to a stadium and being able to choose any seat you want. I'll just claim to be a representative-at-large, and since Democrats think checking ID is voter suppression, I should be able to get a front-row seat for Obama's acceptance speech. That's about as far as I can throw a pie.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, That's interesting because Missouri has always been considered a bellwether. But if they have had people leaving the two big cities on either end, then that should shift things considerably to the right, I would think.

ObamaClaire -- LOL! Nice!

You made 13,000 phone calls?! Arg. I think I'd rather die than make 13,000 phone calls.

AndrewPrice said...

Lawhawk, LOL! "There's nothing like going to a stadium and being able to choose any seat you want." Brilliant!

I would laugh my rear end off if the story of the convention became about empty seats at the Democratic convention!

T-Rav said...

HotAir had a run-through in its story on McCaskill ducking out of all the Democrats who won't be attending the convention this year. It was basically every senator running for re-election in a red state, and more than a few representatives in the same pickle. And a bunch of them are wringing their hands that it's going to be in North Carolina, which is...not well-disposed towards Obama just now.

If the media shows only close-up shots of the stage and delegates during the convention, we'll know the stadium really is empty.

T-Rav said...

Andrew, it wasn't fun, especially if you count in the hundreds of doors I knocked on. If you live in Missouri, there's a fairly good chance I interrupted your dinner at some point to ask who you were voting for. Those people could get pretty huffy sometimes. But, McCain wound up winning MO by less than 4,000 votes. So I'd like to think I had a vital part in keeping those 11 EVs out of Obama's hands, which makes me happy. And I got an award from the state College Republicans, so.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, "If you live in Missouri, there's a fairly good chance I interrupted your dinner at some point to ask who you were voting for." Nice! :)

An award? Cool. "First Man to Meet Everyone In Missouri"!

I haven't compiled a list yet of who all is staying away, but from the sound of things, every Democrat in the red states is freaked out about being seen with the other Democrats this year. That's a horrible sign for their party, and it's a horrible sign for Obama. I think this means the writing is on the wall and we're just waiting for the inevitable at this point.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they have a hard time filling the stadium because nobody wants to blow a week on a sure loser.

AndrewPrice said...

P.S. As for keeping Obama from winning Mo, we should get you a tee shirt!

Bev, Now there is a thought! We're going to need to watch this convention closely to see if the audience starts to shimmer or moves like videogame characters!

AndrewPrice said...

AndrewPrice said...

Kit, Yeah, jumped the gun on Obama. :)

That's true. Both had/have been rotten ex-presidents. I was just judging them on their body of work as Presidents.

But hey, if it weren't for Nixon, Obama couldn't be getting all those loans approved from China!

I'm guessing that the big Greek columns and statuary from Obama's triumphal nomination speech in 2008 will be staying in storage for 2012 and will instead be for his Ex-Presidential Library. Maybe for this years convention, they can scale it back to something like the mini-Stonehenge from "This is Spinal Tap"!

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, That would be hilarious! A mini-Stone Henge, exploding inflatable people as he speaks! This could make for a heck of a parody! :)

Kit, Erdogan is indeed starting to become a problem. He's not a danger, but he's definitely become a problem and I think he's leading Turkey down some bad paths, particularly in their treatment of the Kurds.

I have a hard time believing what I am hearing here. Really, members of your own party actually threatening not to show up?

I remember back when the rising inevitability of Romney getting nominated was driving a similar response on the GOP side not so long ago.

Third, how the heck are they low on money, I figured the Democratic Party at least had banks and hollywood assistance there, perhaps my term of employment at a bank is draining their fund-raisers?

All I am saying is that plenty of what is going on, including when I heard it on the radio on the way home from work today, sounded a little too good to be true.

Robert Reich - . . . . aw jeez, Andrew-- thanks for that image. Here I thought it was patriotic to spend less when we are all broke.

Jed, Glad to be of assistance! LOL!

Nope, Reich says we had it backwards. And I can't possibly think of any reason to doubt him.
