Monday we asked you for the five best things about your town. Today we want the five worst. Is it the stink coming from old man Wilson's place? The killer bees? The killer pandas? The panda rendering plant? The gang wars? Or is it just plain dull?

Andrew:
1. Nancy Pelosi doesn't spend all her time in DC. 2. The homeless people have taken over the spaces on the Wharf that the sea lions left behind. 3. The space the homeless people leave open on the sidewalks is filthy. 4. The Chinese merchant vessels coming in under the Golden Gate will be unloaded at the Port of Oakland (not in San Francisco) using the new super-cranes manufactured in, you guessed it, China. 5. The Board of Supervisors have decided that the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks are too conservative. BONUS: If you stand by Sutro Tower at the top of Twin Peaks (with binoculars) you can watch the gang shootouts in the Bay View and Hunters Point districts.
OK, I know that sounds a lot like my best five things about San Francisco, but what the heck.
Lawhawk, LOL! Nice list. . . it does sound somewhat familiar?!
Our biggest problem here is a city government that wants to raise taxes so they don't need to cut any staff. So they are doing things like turning off 1/3 of the street lights or leaving the potholes unfilled, just to show us.
Beyond that...
2. Too many minivans. They came in a great wave when all the megachurches showed up. It should be legal to drive them off the road.
3. The pathetic new property developments. Do developers have no taste. . . wait, I know the answer to that.
4. We've suddenly got homeless drug addicts camping near downtown.
5. This place is growing too fast, and too many are the "wrong sort". . . Californians.
Patti, It is amazing how well informed small town networks are. I've spent time in small towns and found that everyone knew what was going on even before it happened!
We have the same California problem. There should be a spray or something. . .
1. They lie when they say NYC is the city tht doesn't sleep; 2. The Liberals; 3. The Mexican food - the only major food group that no one does well here. 4. Tourists (no offense) 5. Rangel, Schumer, Gillibrand, Bloomberg etc.
idiot drivers (we seem to have more than our fair share, want some?),
Even in the Internet Age what's "cool" often isn't cool any more when it gets here. (Not that I usually care, but I have a daughter who just became a teenager)
and did I mention humidity?
Oh, as an added bonus, our fair city is right on the edge of "Tornado Alley".
USArtguy, When I lived in DC, we had weeks in the summer (June through November) where it was between 80-90 each day with 80% humidity. . . and mosquitoes the size of bombers. That was miserable.
Oh, yeah, I forgot - When I look over the Hudson River you see New Jersey...but on the bright side, when they look over the Hudson, they see Manhattan!
Jed, my grandmother was from Clarksville, TN. She was born on a tobacco plantation...She's my favorite thing about Tennessee! Oh, and Davie Crockett and Sam Houston, and Jim Bowie too. Tennessee is a beautiful state.
Traffic! My wife and I moved about thirty miles north of Atlanta twenty years ago to escape the city, and guess what it’s here. Next stop Florida, or up by Jed!
This city in the ‘60s had a metro population of around half million now there’s close to six million, and still growing. Guess where many are coming from? California, NY, The Rust Belt, and bringing their blue state crap with them.
1. Tourists that don't know how to drive (I seriously think they leave their brains behind - if they had any to begin with).
2. I could complain about the heat and humidity, but it's actually cooler on the coast than inland.
3. Ticks, poisonous snakes and various other "pests".
4. The nor'easters in winter. There is no escaping that wind. My husband is from Pittsburgh and works outside. He says that no matter how many layers he puts on, the wind finds a way to get through.
5. Traffic in the summer. There are only two ways onto our stretch of the Outer Banks and we are two miles from one of the bridges. Every Saturday, the traffic backs up well past our street. We don't even think about going out to take care of errands between 11:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M.
Andrew, we've been really blessed when it comes to hurricanes. Cape Hatteras, Buxton and Frisco tend to get hit the hardest because they stick out the farthest. The last really bad one was Isabelle in 2003.
And yes, the traffic is a real pain in the summer, but you learn to deal with it. After all, the tourists help keep out economy going.
By the way, is anyone else having trouble with their Google account? When I leave Commentarama and come back later to post, it doesn't recognize my password or it gives me a message that the word verification doesn't match what I typed in. I've had to change my password three times in order to post a comment. TJ
TJ, I haven't had that problem, but I know that other people have had that problem in the past. We are currently having a problem where some comments seem to vanish or don't appear on the comment count, only to reappear again later for no reason.
Unfortunately, the Google system seems to have a lot of flaws.
TJ, Sorry about that. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do -- it is a Google issue. So we need to hope they fix whatever the problem is. It might just stop all on its own.

1) the wind NEVER STOPS BLOWING.
2) front lawns are an extension of driveways.
3) whenever i go home, folks know ahead of time, i'm coming. small town communications = can't match technology.
4) you have to leave town to get specialized medical care.
5) Californians think owning a ranch is cool and they are moving in by the truckloads.
Law: your #1 made me laugh. that last sentence would have been funnier (to me) if it had been your #2.

The only good part of Californians coming to town is if you are leaving--and they buy your house! They pay asking or get into bidding wars!
New Town near Boston
1.ugly
2.smells
3.Democrats
4.Dunkin Donuts everywhere
5.Can't buy wine and beer in supermarket
Complaints not necessarily in that order.
crisd: #5 is barbaric.
Andrew, ask me this question in August. Whe the temperature in the desert is around 120 degrees.
Writer X, . . . but it's a dry heat! ;-)
CrisD, That basically fits with my recollection of Boston. Add in horrible traffic and confused, torn up roads, and that about sums up the place.
1. They lie when they say NYC is the city tht doesn't sleep;
2. The Liberals;
3. The Mexican food - the only major food group that no one does well here.
4. Tourists (no offense)
5. Rangel, Schumer, Gillibrand, Bloomberg etc.
BUT, we can buy alkeehall on Sundays now!
Bev, There's no good Mexican food in NYC? Hmmm. Who knew?
I can see where the liberal infestation would be a problem.
If you want a city that really doesn't sleep, go to Vegas. They let you gamble 24/7 until you run out of money or die in your seat!
highs have been around 80 with lows in upper 50's
Red Town in a Red State.
Great view of the Little Tennessee and the Unicoi range
Gas prices are only 20 cents per gallon lower than the national average.
All the people are really friendly.
It's the worst I can think of on short notice.
Horrible humidity in the summer,
mosquitos (+ humidity = misery),
idiot drivers (we seem to have more than our fair share, want some?),
Even in the Internet Age what's "cool" often isn't cool any more when it gets here. (Not that I usually care, but I have a daughter who just became a teenager)

Jed, You sound pretty happy. LOL!

Oh, yeah, the taxes...
Why do I live here again??

TJ, I hear about hurricanes down there all time?
I guess traffic must be bad down there in the summers. I knew many people who went down there for the summers.
Andrew, we've been really blessed when it comes to hurricanes. Cape Hatteras, Buxton and Frisco tend to get hit the hardest because they stick out the farthest. The last really bad one was Isabelle in 2003.

Thanks, I guess I'll just stick with posting under "Anonymous". TJ

Do you have the problem at other sites as well?
