Just when you thought that the poor and downtrodden had been abandoned in America, I am happy to inform you that the United Nations Human Rights Council has graciously agreed to investigate the plethora of abuses of human dignity which are being being perpetrated on a daily basis nationwide. Ongoing rape, pillage, genocide, religious wars and the like will be addressed in due course. But since those are occurring elsewhere in the world, this investigation will be about housing.
The Council has appointed a Special Rapporteur to convict America of maltreating its poorest citizens by failing to provide adequate housing. I avoided using the word "investigate" since the result is a foregone conclusion. The Human Rights Council is the successor to the UN Commission on Human Rights (aka the Destroy Israel and Cripple America Commission). I'm not entirely sure, but I think that a Special Rapporteur is what the Spanish used to call a Grand Inquisitor.
Here is the charge given to the Rapporteur: "To investigate human rights violations by the United States because of a perception that there isn't enough affordable public housing in urban areas." So we're not only going to be investigated because we're not providing grand enough digs for the poor and unskilled who choose to live in ridiculously expensive urban centers, but we're going to be convicted on a "perception."
And whom did they choose to pursue this persecution? None other than Raquel Rolnik, who is a Brazilian urban planner. I assume that she has never seen the slums of Rio or Sao Paolo in her own nation, or we'd be cleared of any wrongdoing in the first five minutes. The issues of concern to the Council are public housing, homelessness and foreclosures. She will visit New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Washington DC, a South Dakota Indian reservation, and Wiles-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Now you may be wondering how an economic issue such as this has become worthy of a UN investigation. You must remember that the UN is even farther left than Obama's administration, and indulges in "moral equivalencies" at quantum speeds faster than the Carter administration. The United Nations is comprised largely of nations where the populaces live in caves, tents, and corrugated tin shacks, but it nevertheless considers housing to be a "human right." Thus it is perfect fodder for the Human Rights Council. Never mind that in nations where the UN has been sent to help, a large portion of the population has ended up residing in graves.
Here are a few pre-investigation comments made by Rolnik before leaving for the vast wastelands of urban America. "I am going to hear the voices of those who are suffering on the ground." "I am representing the right of adequate housing as a human right (that redundancy wasn't lost on me)." "Affordable housing in the United States is not that affordable." Livable housing in the Rio slums is nearly non-existent at any price. "I see this mission as an opportunity to open a dialogue, to open a movement, towards the achievement and implementation of the right to adequate housing." "We know very well that changes will come only if people organize." She and Obama must share policy speechwriters.
You know full well that the report will ultimately be somewhere between terrible and totally damning. She has already drawn her conclusions, all that is left is to determine the seriousness of the great American crime.
And now, for the frosting on the cake. A special rapporteur can only enter a sovereign nation to investigate abuses if invited to do so by the highest authority. Anybody want to guess who that somebody is? I'll give you a hint--he recently acted as chairman of the UN Security Council after being praised by housing experts Moammar Qaddafi, Hugo Chavez and various other tinpot dictators. He currently resides in a fine white mansion in Washington, DC.

And they wonder why Americans don't trust the UN. Give me a break. It's time to shut the thing down.
What a worthless organization. To think that they get one penny of U.S. taxpayer money is sickening. On a positive note, perhaps the Special Puppeteer should start with Chicago's southside, where President Obama did such a fine job of community organizing...
You know this has to be part of that usual twisted logic of Obama's that he would allow this farce. He probably sought it out to prove to his new BFFs Kim, Hugo, and Mahmoud that the we do not think that we are any better than they are and the US is not above allowing UN investigations.
I am disgusted my taxes help fund this thing. It might be a great campaign issue discussing how much money we provide to the United Nations and then pledging to help reduce government wast by immediately withdrawing membership as well as all financial support to that organization. "Get out of our yard" campaign stickers, perhaps.
Andrew: Do you think we have the technology to tunnel under the whole Turtle Bay Complex and simply send the United Nations drifting off to sea? I can dream, can't I?
WriterX: I can't help but believe that the omission was intentional. If you compare the Hyde Park section of Chicago in which Obama and the pinky-finger elitists live with the South Side, it's the difference between the Taj Mahal and the Black Hole of Calcutta. Can't have those kinds of comparisons being made, now can we?
Bev: I think the whole thing is a plan to revitalize ACORN. First, get the UN to find poverty, homelessness, and "unaffordable housing," then hire all the people who live there as community organizers, thus providing an instant income for the otherwise unemployable and a socialist takeover of private property to provide the previously unaffordable housing as a benefit of ACORN employment.
Tennessee: It is an ongoing thorn in my side knowing that without the financial support of the U.S., the U.N. would collapse or end up being financed by the Arab oil sheikhs and moved to Mecca. Either one is fine by me.
Law - If we kick the UN out of New York City, then a whole bunch of prime real estate opens up. Not only the UN complex itself, but all of those beautiful and fancy townhouses owned by each country as their official Mission residences. Upper East Side real estate prices would collapse.
I have always thought that the UN should move it's headquarters to Jerusalem anyway. Then the Palestians would bomb the hell out of the UN for a while instead of Israel. Then we will see how the the UN security counsel likes it...
Bev: But where will the affordable housing come from? LOL
Law - Here's how it will work. All of the UN properties will go on sale. The Ultra Rich will buy all of the UN property at ridiculously low prices (well, for the Ultra Rich anyway) and move in. Then the Filthy Rich will buy the Ultra Richs' old properties and sell their properties to the Slightly Rich. They sell their property to the Merely Well-Off and so on and so on until finally there is enough of a shift that housing becomes available at the low end for the homeless and downtrodden. And the UN will have finally done something useful and can take credit for housing the homeless of New York by just leaving...Everybody wins.
Bev: I like your style. Now could you please explain cap 'n tax to me? What are rents like now around E. 52nd and Lex? During my sojourn in NYC, I was paying $175.00/month, utilities included. But of course I now have a closet that is bigger than that entire apartment.
I really got a kick out of your description of "ridiculously low prices, for the ultra rich." I was talking to a former client who was ecstatic that he had just scored a studio in lower Pacific Heights for a mere $1.2 million. My apartment is twice as big, and I have a view. Why San Francisco wasn't included in the UN study is totally beyond me. Of course we have a lot of homeless people--who can afford to live here?
Lawhawk--What bothers me more than anything about this "investigation" is that it was Obama who invited them in. We all know that we have housing problems in the urban centers (elimination of socialist rent-control would go a long way to relieving that), but the idea of the most dishonest and undemocratic organization in the world setting America up for worldwide ridicule with the good wishes of the President is appalling. How anti-American is this slimebag?
HamiltonsGhost: Join the club. This president leaves no opportunity to bash America unexploited. And once again, he's having someone else do his dirty work. He can then say "looky here, an independent organization said this--I didn't." He's not just a slimebag, he's a sneak.
Law, okay, so take a deep breath. That apartment you paid $175 a month (including utilities) would probably cost about $1500-2000 today.
Bev: I guess I'm not too surprised. I came back to San Francisco after my sojourn in NYC, and found a ridiculously expensive apartment. It was $150 per month, but it was near the top of Nob Hill, and had a panoramic view of the City, from the Golden Gate to the Bay Bridge and Coit Tower. So I bit the bullet. Four years later, I got married and moved back to Southern California. When I returned to San Francisco in 1990, I checked out my old digs. $1950 per month, and that was nearly 20 years ago. If I hadn't bitten the bullet and taken the apartment I have now, I wouldn't even be close to being able to afford it. Three yuppies share the apartment below mine, but only rented it six months ago. They have a partially-obstructed view, and they're paying just about $2,000 per month more than I'm paying up in what I jokingly call "the penthouse." I don't need the UN to tell me this is totally out of control. Thanks for the update.
This is SOP for our Barry. The UN is liberal Shangri-La - - a pointless debating society that specializes in making the simple, complicated. I know I’m kind of sick, but it just makes me point, and laugh. Any innate gobbledy-gook that you can dredge up from the past forty years, will now become reality. So I say haul ass Barry, get out as far to left as you can, hold hands with the UN, and America will cut the rope, and the dumb-dumb that Barry is will forever be immortalized in an electoral landslide. Then maybe, just maybe America can begin to vanquish ‘60s radicalism once, and for all, sending it back into the “Purple Haze,” from whence it came.
StanH: Nicely said. Like several others, I'm angrier about Obama's international apology tour followed by inviting a rogue organization to find further fault with America than I am with the action of the Council itself. Jimmy Carter at his "great national malaise" height never went out of his way to bad-mouth America, apologize for the monumental oppressor we've been, then invite an America-hating organization to come to our cities to condemn us.
I wish we knew when and where this UN nitwit will be, so we could arrange a welcoming protest, maybe through the Tea Parties? Jimmy has made up for keeping a civil tongue while in office. He has used his every breath as x-president to dog out this great land in his insipid morally equivalent fantasy land. I expect Barry to pick up the mantle when peanut is gone.
No good can come of this. Does O think he's going over our heads to teach us a lesson or something? Shame us??
Has the UN ever been "invited" to investigate within US boundaries before?
StanH: I think that Carter has just gone a bit nuts after suffering such a complete rejection by the American people. I never expected a sitting president to bad-mouth his own country overseas. But you may be right--and then some. If Obama's willing to treat America like a third-world banana republic while in office, imagine what he'll do when he's rejected by the American people just like Carter. It won't be a pretty sight.
Suzie1: The sole reason that the UN ghouls and vampires haven't descended on America sooner is that every administration, Republican and Democratic, have laughed at even the prospect of allowing such a thing. So the answer to your question is--no, it has never happened before. I guess Obama's imprimatur on the investigation is just proof that he promised us change, and at least in this area, he's going to deliver it.
