The Incredible Shrinking Everything

It’s time for a rant. The government tells us there’s no inflation worth mentioning. The MSM, which couldn’t stop talking about gas prices under Bush, reports this mindlessly and somehow doesn't notice that massive inflation is everywhere. And companies are trying to hide the fact they've been shrinking their products. Grrrr.

The Consumer Price Index is a measure of what it costs urban consumers to buy a basket of goods and services. This is how the government tracks inflation. According to the government, the CPI is running at a rate of about 1.1% inflation if you exclude food and fuel. When you include food and fuel, this number increases to a 2.3% inflation rate. Gee, that's not so bad, except that it's not true.

I bought a new car during the financial crash in 2008. I couldn’t pass up the deal as Chrysler was having a fire sale and basically shoved the keys into my pocket in exchange for some lint. When I filled it up in the first week, it cost me a whopping $38.50. I wasn't pleased, but that's life. Since that time, Obama supposedly tamed inflation. Indeed, we’ve been warned about “deflation.” Yet, when I filled up my car this weekend, it cost me $54!! That’s an increase of $15.50 or 40.3% in three years. That works out to roughly a 12% inflation rate. . . not the 1.2% claimed by the CPI for food and fuel.

Maybe the problem is just gas, right? Hardly. T-shirts, tennis shoes, printer ink, printer paper. . . it’s all more expensive than it was even six months go, when it was already more expensive than the six months before that. The local newspaper shrank a couple inches on each side and lost about a third of its pages. . . and 100% of its relevance. One of the magazines I get suddenly looks like they're printing it on used paper and it too seems awfully thin. Electricity and water are both way up too. I went to McDonalds the other day and paid around 30% more than I paid two years ago. And while the "Dollar Menu" is still there, almost nothing on it was a dollar.

But where you really see inflation is in groceries. Or, should I say, where you really have inflation but you don’t see it is in groceries. Why don’t you see it? Because producers are hiding it. For example, I’ve made spaghetti for decades. So imagine my surprise when suddenly the proportions seemed wrong in my recipe. How could that be? Well, because even though the noodles cost the same as always, the amount of noodles in the package shrunk. Yep. A 16 oz. package of spaghetti noodles now suddenly contains only 12.5 oz. That translates into a 25% hidden price increase!! Yet, the box is identical and there was no announcement: "Now with less than ever before!" or "Contains 25% more air!"

Have you opened a box of Captain Crunch lately? You’ll have to reach 25% further down into the box before you find the sugar-coated sugar bombs. I hope you have long arms. Donuts are smaller too. . . dammit. And they’re way more expensive. And now they're getting chintzy on cream! What the heck?! Coke is more expensive too. What was a regular price for Coke became a sales price. . . became a rare sales price. . . disappeared into history. Despite Coke’s best efforts to mix up their package sizes to confuse the buyer, I’m pretty sure Coke is twice as expensive now as it was five years ago. Cadbury Eggs, a personal favorite, are up 33% in two years. Damn you Easter Bunny!

In each of these instances, the product shrunk but the package remained identical. In some instances, they even put new claims on the label to distract you from what they'd done, such as in the photo above where Scott claims their new smaller toilet paper is "Now Stronger!" It better be, it's got more work to do.

So why is no one mentioning this? Why does the media ignore this trend? And why is our government lying to us about inflation and getting away with it? Oh, that’s right, because there’s a free-spending Democrat in charge. I guess we'll have to wait until 2012 to hear how bad inflation really is. Grrrr.

Andrew, it's driving me crazy. Here at the local Wal-Mart, milk has gone up to over $4 a gallon (!), a loaf of bread is well over $2, a frozen pizza close to $4...and so on and so on. Obviously, this is because of the knock-on effects of gas prices shooting up, and because of the dollar's decline--thanks for printing all that money, Bush and Obama!

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like this to go away once Obama leaves office, it's going to take the next president a lot of time to repair the damage he's caused.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I concur! This isn't going away any time soon. What really bugs me though is that no one in the MSM mentions this. You can bet in 2012 when we get a President Trump with an "R" behind his name, there will be a million stories about the price of everything going up.... but right now, nothing. In fact, the only time I see stories on this, it's the MSM telling us that "our economy can handle the increase in gas prices." Bull. EVERYTHING is getting outrageously expensive!

AndrewPrice said...

P.S. An executive at Wal-Mart gave an interview the other day about what they are expecting in the next few years and he said "serious inflation across the board." He said it would be very noticeable to consumers. Oh joy.

DUQ said...

Oh tell me about it! It's really gotten noticable in the past two years. I'm not saying it didn't start before that, but it's gotten really bad lately.

T_Rav said...

"President Trump"? ?!?!? Geez, I hope not.

I've only seen a couple stories from the network news outlets on this massive inflation, and then they're not really investigating it, they're advising consumers on how to deal with it. Complete hacks.

AndrewPrice said...

DUQ, I think it's going to get worse too because both oil and fertilizer costs are going way up on the commodities market. So brace yourself for more.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I know. The few stories I've seen have been about how "it won't derail the recovery." Of course, we know the story would be very different if there was a Republican in the White House. Then every journalist in the MSM would want to do a story about how the poor and middle class are being crushed.

That's why I think we won't hear how bad inflation is until 2012, when we get a Republican president and inflation suddenly returns. . . along with homelessness.

Did I say President Trump? LOL! I'm just kidding. He's a joke and I didn't want to say "President Palin" or "President Romney" or "President Paul" and start a fight.

I'll get back to outlining the candidates in a couple days and I'll do Trump at some point. This man is about as Republican as Jimmy Carter.

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

The last time the MSM was honest with the people was during the Carter years. The misery index comes to mind. The MSM isn't going to spoil their boy's chances in the next election.

And if we elect a republican, the next day the MSM will find that whups... because we elected this "nasty hateful homophobic regressive neanderthal" inflation came back with a BOOOM!! And everything will be blamed on the republican from the pimple on your nose to the sun not shining from midnight to six am. Notice that inflation will be caused because we elected a republican and not dear much maligned Obama.

The rhetoric is so predictable and noxious smelling it is a wonder liberals can breath.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I think that's true. I think the moment we get a Republican you'll start seeing articles on "where did all this horrible inflation come from?!!" combined with stories like "are President Trump's policies killing the old and the poor?"

You'll also see a return of the homeless, who apparently no longer exist. The MSM will discover that kids are taking drugs, that an unemployment rate of 9% is a crime against humanity, etc. It's so predictable and so disgusting.

In fact, for those paying attention, it was interesting to see that homelessness and inflation seemed to vanish from the nightly news the moment Obama was elected -- just like war casualties.... apparently, no one dies in Obama's wars (on either side).

And somehow 6% unemployment under Bush was the literal end of the world, but 9% under Obama is a sign of recovery and a good thing? Huh?!

And isn't it interesting that a couple hillbillies pose for embarrassing photos with Iraqi prisoners under Bush and the media goes insane, calling for us to abanon Iraq and Bush/Cheney to be arrested as war criminals, but now that someone has discovered this "kill team," it gets entirely ignored because it couldn't possibly have anything to do with Obama. . . just like how liberals are always "derranged lone gunmen" whereas conservatives are "a reflection of the rotten core of conservatism."

I know there is nothing we can do about the MSM, but it truly angers me that they play this double standard.

Iced Matty said...

Media hypocrisy is the reason the Lame Stream Media is dying. You can't pretend to be unbiased and then act the way they do and not expect people to stop paying attention.

The first item I noticed that had shrinked was canned tuna (and the price went up as well). We shop at three different stores to find the best prices on certain items. For a family of four, we used to be able to keep our grocery bill right around $100.00 per week, but now we can't get out of the store for less than $150.00. It's despicable that just because a demoncrat is in offer that no one will report on this.

Andrew,

I say use their double standard against them. Since they are so predictable we can write their copy, let's do just that.

You know when Obama loses the MSM will ask "serious minded" people if racism is back. Let's say they are correct The RACISTS from the MSM are back. They will now repeat and spew forth every racist comment they can find. Let us start labeling the MSM as racist. Until they drop these racist comments, continue to accuse them of racism.

If anything, it will confuse them and get them back on their heels and defending themselves.

AndrewPrice said...

Iced Matty, What's amazing is that journalists still talk about the integrity of their profession, but they just don't see this.

As an aside, are you a Falcon's fan?

AndrewPrice said...

TJ, I agree completely. I saw it first with noodles and cereal. But now I'm seeing it everywhere. Almost anything that comes in a box or can is shrinking (often with price hikes, but not always). And things that can't be hidden inside the package are just getting more and more expensive. Like you, I'm pretty sure my grocery bill has gone up about 50% and I'm even being more careful about what I buy -- so in real terms, it's probably higher than 50%. But we're told inflation is only 1.2%?? Give me a break.

What makes the media's refusal to cover this all the worse is that by failing to point these things out, they prevent the kind of pressure that keeps these kinds of changes in check. In other words, when every producer knows they can shrink things without anyone noticing, they will do it. But if they know they might end up on the news or that people are watching for it, they'll think twice.

Not to mention that once this issue gets a fair public hearing, people will start to ask why we aren't drilling more and why we're diverting corn to ethanol and the such. That's why we have such massive inflation right now -- our government's environmental policy.

AndrewPrice said...

P.S. TJ, Don't worry about the typos, we don't count them against your grade for the semester! ;-)

I do wish Google had an edit mode, but they don't. The best we can offer is to rewrite the comment and delete the original.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I forgot about racism. No doubt racism will be back big time once Obama loses. Right now it's just Republicans, conservatives and "those who would oppose." But after 2012, it will be the nation as a whole and we'll be back to hearing how we need to "heal from our legacy of racism." Yeah, right.

In terms of labeling the MSM racist, I'm not sure that will work because they see themselves as pure on all front... only other people are racists.

Anonymous said...

At the same time the MSM discovers that a Republican president has caused massive inflation, they will rediscover the masses of homeless people who disappeared during the Clinton and Obama administrations. Predictable as hell.

AndrewPrice said...

Lawhawk, But.. but.. but.. there are no homeless anymore, are there?

I remember reading a whole series of articles about homelessness right at the end of 2008, right before the election and how things were "worse than ever" because of the recession. Literally, the day after Obama was elected, they stopped mentioning homelessness -- not another article. It's stunning.

Joel Farnham said...

Andrew,

The question should really be, Who keeps perpetuating racism? Regular people or the MSM?

Finding and glorifying racism is their business.

Oh, we forgot something. Aids will make a roaring comeback.

AndrewPrice said...

Joel, I think there is no doubt that the media is obsessed with racism. They can see it anything that affects any non-white person (and in anything that doesn't affect non-whites). So in that regard, it is absolutely the media that is perpetuating racism because they are looking for it everywhere.

A classic example was the guy who drew the political cartoon showing Obama as a monkey (when the cop made the arrest). This picture was almost identical to a similar picture of Bush as a monkey from only a few months before, yet the Bush picture was just a political cartoon but the media jumped all over the Obama cartoon as deep-seated racism... not only of the cartoonist, but of all of us. How does that work?

AIDS? I thought AIDS was cured, along with poverty in Africa, malaria, poverty in the US, lack of food safety and unsafe working condition in the US?

It's amazing how much nice things are under Democrat Presidents, isn't it.... with nothing possibly being wrong in society. grrr.

AndrewPrice said...

Actually, Joel, now that I think of it, this whole discussion reminds me of this article I wrote about how different administrations get treated differently to give the public a sense that it's nicer to live under Democrats:

I claimed nothing about my toilet paper!

Oh.

Consumerist.com has a feature called the Grocery Shrink Ray in which they publish stories on exactly what you describe. I've been noticing it myself for a while, mostly when it comes to junk food (ahem). Nice to see a fellow Cadbury egg fan!

When it comes to food, I might be mistaken but isn't one of the reasons for inflation related to all the corn that's being used to make fuel, as opposed to actual food? Or do I have two separate problems intertwined?

I'll be back later. My music box arrived today so I'll be busy for several hours. :-)

AndrewPrice said...

Scott, It took me a second to get the toilet paper comment. LOL! Who knew you were a toilet paper magnet or is it magnate? ;-)

Thanks for the link. Once again, the internet is well ahead of the MSM... which apparently doesn't buy groceries. I think I'll check that out and start switching to brands that aren't shrinking.

In terms of inflation, there are two big inflation factors. First, you have the ethanol issue, which is huge. They are diverting a ton of corn into the production of ethanol in the US. Unfortunately, corn goes into almost all processed foods -- everything from cereal to beer to corn syrup in drinks. It's also used as animal feed, so meat gets or expensive as well. So the increase in corn prices is causing a ripple effect in the rest of the food world.

Secondly, the increased cost of gasoline is making it that much more expensive to grow and transport the food.

All of that is finding its way into the price of food. And what I'm seeing is anywhere between 15% and 50% inflation in most items, even though the official rate is 1.2%.

Oh yeah, Cadbury eggs rock!

Iced Matty said...

Yep. You're a Bucs fan right? Any thoughts on Morris?

AndrewPrice said...

Iced Matty, Yep... the name gave it away! LOL!

Yeah, I'm a Bucs fan, but I'm not happy. I think Morris and Dominic are incompetent, and they got lucky behind the softest schedule in NFL history, and now everyone thinks they're geniuses even though the evidence completely contradicts that.

The Falcons seems to be coming together after decades of the "Vick experience."

I'm reminded of one of Anne Coulter's books. The acerbic, but almost always eloquent Anne was detailing how the amount of news stories devoted to the housing varied dramatically based on which party was in power. Yes, you guessed correctly, more lines of type devoted (and in a negative context) when the right wing controlled the white house.

AndrewPrice said...

Jed, Yep, add housing to the list. No matter what the issue is, our MSM likes to only report the negative when a Republican is in power either ignore the issue or only report the good when a Democrat is in power. That's why I expect a massive surge in inflation related articles in 2012.

Ed said...

You should see food prices around here. My home town is growing like mad and that brings with it all kinds of over-pricing. You're right though, inflation is out of control and no one in the establishment wants to say that. I'm thinking they like the idea of inflation.

AndrewPrice said...

Ed, Not to get conspiratorial, but there is a reason the government would like inflation. Specifically, it reduces the real cost of the debts it needs to pay off. So I can't say they are upset to see inflation.

See, you guys don't have the sympathetic Mayor Bloomberg to show you the way, you complainers. He would just sooth your furrowed brows by telling you to Buy Less, you fools!

Our electric rates are going up 12% in May because...well...they can. Mayor Mike's answer was to just tell us to turn our thermostats up! Well, I feel so much better now...

AndrewPrice said...

Patti, The Cadbury eggs have been a particular source of annoyance as they are quite tasty. But the price is getting to the point that my "value sensors" are starting to say, "this might not be a good deal anymore." Hmmm. We are headed for tragedy.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, There's nothing like a sympathetic mayor who has the answers to all of life's questions. Of course, I personally would have preferred an answer like (1) we're going to cut your taxes, (2) we're going to open up drilling on the East side, (3) we're going to drop all the ethanol support....

Yeah, that would be a little better than "tough it out suckers."

T_Rav said...

Andrew, that's not conspiratorial at all. How do you think Weimar Germany paid off its WWI debts? (Hint: it wasn't by penny-pinching and fiscal responsibility.)

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, Yeah, that's true. Plus, South America tried the same thing in the 1970s. Of course, it didn't really work for any of them, unless you count defaults, bankrupt economies and a world war as success. But I'm sure Obama and the boys know what they are doing, they'll violate the laws of economics the right way and we'll all be ok.

** rolls eyes **

T_Rav said...

Andrew, wait, you're saying that's NOT a success? (snort)

By the way, and slightly OT (but not really), there is some really interesting stuff going on in DC today with the budget and shutdown threats, as I'm sure you know. I just got back and spent the past hour catching up--God help us, I really think Boehner's not backing down on this.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, In terms of that being considered a success, I guess that depends on your point of view. If you make arms, if you're in a union, or if you run the History Channel, then it's probably a success. If you're anyone else, then it's probably not a success.

On the budget, I don't think Boehner is going to back down because the latest polls (will write about those tomorrow morning) show that a huge majority want cuts and don't care if it causes a shutdown! And I think he knows that he needs to stand tall now or he won't get the chance to run the House in 2012 when we might have all the cards.

It's interesting times, that's for sure!

T_Rav said...

Andrew, I'm hopeful. Of course, you should never doubt the capacity of the GOP to fold at the last second, but if they force a shutdown--or, more accurately, manuever the Democrats into forcing a shutdown--I'll have to stop saying that. What I especially like right now is Boehner upping the ante on Reid--he'll give up the Planned Parenthood and public broadcasting defunding in the current CR if the Dems agree to an increase in overall cuts. Plus, the cuts are coming across the board, including defense, so the Democrats can't say the GOP is protecting its "sacred cows." Thanks to Obama's repeated punting, they've really blundered into a trap, it seems to me.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I am honestly stunned at how well the Republicans have been handling this. I think they've played it just right so far by defusing everything the Democrats have tried and by constantly setting traps for the Democrats.

The Planned Parenthood thing is a great example -- Boehner is basically saying, "tell the public if you're more interested in pushing government-sponsored abortion or in cutting the deficit." There is no good answer for Reid. Either he anger the public and exposes the lie that he's not pro-abortion, or he angers one of their strongest supporters -- in the AARP, NAACP vein.

And then with Obama flailing around trying to avoid responsibility in this whole thing, (1) he looks incredibly weak, lazy and indecisive, and (2) the Democrats look like they are in full-on retreat. They've even gotten so desperate that Pelosi tried arguing today that the Republican goal is to "take away meals for seniors." Yeah, sure, and we want to sell their organs too. It's ridiculous, and no one is buying it because the Democrats caused this problem and can't now credibly claim that they are being constructive in solving it when all they are doing is being shrill about any actual cut.

StanH said...

To add a conspiratorial bent, this is all by design, a liberal wet dream if you will, they’ve taken care of consumerism, urban sprawl, global warming, American greed, etc. …by any measure this is what they intend. By us using less the liberals can redistribute allowing the rest of the world a step up, look at Brazil and Barry’s promise to be their best customer for oil…huh! …I thought oil was evil?

AndrewPrice said...

Stan, It's amazing how many things are evil when Americans do them or have them (e.g. drilling for oil or earning money) but become quite noble when we let other countries do it instead and make ourselves dependent on them in the process.

It wouldn't surprise me if hyper-inflation was part of the Democratic plan to lower expectations and slow the economy, in the hopes of getting more people hooked on the government.

StanH said...

It does sound plausible. Beck has become a bit sanctimonious of late, but he has linked past wants with present day reality rather well. All the liberal gobbledygook we’ve been fed for forty plus years, is here. The good news, I believe people are recognizing the leftist hooey for what it is, and are going to utterly refute the leftist dogma as in 2010. I see it as an opportunity of a generation, as do they, however! …I believe that conservative America will prevail. Back to, “who will be our standard bearer?”

AndrewPrice said...

Stan, I see this as the opportunity of a lifetime as well. Let's hope our side is up to the task. Right now I'm optimistic.

In terms of this being a plan, I actually don't doubt that Democratic leaders would like to see more people hooked on government spending. They've been pushing that for decades and occasionally get caught talking about it. The SEIU guy was actually caught talking about trying to cause a Wall Street crash so people would be open to redistribution. So I don't doubt that inflation and bankruptcy might be in some of their playbooks.

T_Rav said...

By the way...(oh heck, I guess I'm just using this as a "anything and everything that's even remotely connected to economics" thread)

There is a major slugfest going on in Wisconsin right now; one of the justices on the state Supreme Court was up for re-election today, and the challenger is a flaming liberal who already said she'd side with the unions if elected. Predictably, SEIU and company have been pulling out all the stops to get her on the bench, yet from the latest numbers I've seen, with 29% of the votes in, Prosser (the incumbent) has a 12,000-vote lead on Kloppenburg (the idiot). When I see another important update, I'll give it a shout-out. Walker's efforts are on the line, people.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, I saw that yesterday, meant to keep track of it, and entirely forgot. Thanks for the update. I hope this guy wins because that will send an important message.

T_Rav said...

Don't mention it, Andrew, late-night updates are what I live for! :-)

The last thing I saw was five minutes ago, Prosser (R) was up by about 11,000 votes with 61% of precincts reporting. I should caution, however, that these votes appear to be coming in county by county, and have been all over the place as a result. There'll be no way of knowing for sure for some time. Still, considering how despondent a lot of conservatives were about this race, the numbers so far are pretty darn impressive.

AndrewPrice said...

T_Rav, Yeah, that's the problem -- you never know where the votes are coming in unless you have Michael Barone sitting there telling you what counties are left and what they mean -- he's pretty incredible with that kind of analysis.

I will definitely keep my fingers crossed, but in an election like this, the odds are with the people who are most upset -- which in this case is the unions.

Of course, this time they don't have a Democratic governor to hold things up as they print off more votes. So we'll see how many ballot boxes spend the next week or so driving around in Democratic trunks before being miraculously discovered just in time to add votes to the Democrat.

T_Rav said...

Okay, it's essentially all tied up; the Madison and Milwaukee people are holding up to find out just how many votes Klopen-something needs to win. Either way, it's almost certainly headed for a recount.

Excellent post, Andrew. Sorry I'm late to this party but just had to comment.

I watched Obama's press conference yesterday. What PLANET is this man on? He tried to paint this rosy picture about great employment numbers (do you know the number has plunged?!), cheery economic climate, blah blah blah. Just walk by any mall and you'll see half the stores closed. Talk to half your friends. I bet at least half are still looking for work and the other half might be waiting to get laid off. And yet prices still continue to climb all the way down the line. I'm so glad we've got a President that is so in touch with reality. Not.

AndrewPrice said...

Thanks Writer X! Late is fine! :-)

I agree about Obama, he's totally out of touch. Everywhere you look, people are unemployed, businesses are either closed or running smaller operations than before, and few people are hiring. Yes, the unemployment number went down, but it has more to do with people falling off the list than it does with anyone finding work.

And when the economy is in recession and employment is low, inflation is the kiss of death. That's stagflation and wasn't supposed to exist until Carter discovered it. And now Obama is refining it.

I'm even later to this, but...

"The local newspaper shrank a couple inches on each side and lost about a third of its pages. . . and 100% of its relevance". Lol ain't that the truth!

I discovered this downsizing a couple years ago (before I was down-sized) when one of my strings of Christmas light refused to light. After wasting an hour replacing several bulbs and the fuse, I went back to the same store the original came from, found the same brand with nearly identical packaging at the same price as my old string and bought it. I got home only to find it was a full SIX FEET shorter than the previous string of a couple years before. Unfortunately, I didn't make this discovery until I was on the roof of my house trying to outline one of the dormers.

it does seem to be a lot worse now, but of course, manufacturer's have been playing games with packaging for years: "product sold by weight, not by volume";"Some settling may occur", etc. Back in the '80s I bought Reese's peanut butter cups out of the machine at my ex job hoping to win a cash prize being offered. I saved wrappers for weeks. Then one day I noticed the contest info had been dropped and the "burst" on the wrapper screamed the candy was NOW BIGGER! Since I still had several old wrappers, I compared the weight. Indeed it was bigger... by .01 ounce per cup.

USArtguy said...

Oh, and where's that reporter who asked Bush Sr. if he knew how much a gallon of milk cost?

AndrewPrice said...

USArtguy,

Wow, .01 ounces! Incredible. I guess that's the minimum they had to do to be able to get away with the label? And six feet shorter on Chrismas lights is a pretty serious difference.

I think it's always been true about manufacturers playing games with packages. I recall similar things in the 1980s as well. It just drives me nuts because I think the whole thing is dishonest.

Sorry to hear about your job! I hope you've got something new lined up?

AndrewPrice said...

P.S. I remember they ran with that for weeks when Bush didn't know the price of milk. Does anyone really think Obama knows? Heck, he just told some guy to buy a new car because he was complaining about the cost of gas! Talk about out of touch!
