Today is the big day in South Carolina. They're finally opening the new WalMart! Oh, and they're having a primary election. It's Romney v. Newt for the Palmetto state, winner take (proportionally) all!
Fox has already started their coverage. CNN starts at 7:00 PM EST. Join us!
In the meantime, riddle me this: if you could make any other country into a state, which country would it be and what would you call the state?

On the countries, easy answer: western Canada. We can call them "Oilada"! :)
CNN says their exit polling is calling it a nail biter.
DUQ, Mooseoil!
By the way, there will be another debate Monday night. Ugh.
I'd rather get rid of a few states than add more. But I wouldn't mind adding Switzerland.
Polls close in 16 mimutes. I think Newt will win it because more males that females are voting. But I think this will be his last hurrah.
Ed, Good call on Switzerland.
I read an interesting article about Newt's chances today and they make a very good point that he is doomed after Florida barring something really incredible happening.
Right now, CNN is virtually gloating that Newt is going to win tonight. They are calling this "the dream scenario" for the White House and I think there is a definite logic to that.
we have 57 states already - who needs more???
rlaWTX, LOL! Bravo!
Maybe we could swap out a few? I'd trade California for pretty much anything else.
Too close to call.
Andrew: Fox is calling it for Gingrich. I agree with you, this is probably list last hurrah.
And we're already hearing the mantra: "No Republican has ever won who didn't first win the South Carolina primary." Well, there's a first time for everything.
Lawhawk, CNN hasn't called it yet, but they are gloating about it.
The article I read was really interesting because it pointed out how Gingrich is playing in other states (not well) and how he has no organization to help him.
What I'm hoping is that this wipes out Santorum finally. He's even lost evangelicals to Gingrich.
Booo, Newt! I hope this is his last hurrah.
CNN is saying that 48% of people in South Carolina thought Gingrich was best to beat Obama.
But frankly, anyone who thinks that is sipping KoolAid.
Tam, I second that. I honestly don't know how people could look at Newt's record and think this man is (1) a conservative, (2) sane, and (3) electable?
Andrew:
"Frankly"? LOL! Are you doing a Newt imitation??
CrisD, I'm glad you caught that! LOL!
I am just looking forward to hearing from Ricky. I am armed with an Appletini.
Gingrich won?! Wow!
Now, I am beginning to think that there is going to be a brokered convention.
I just hope that no one will garner over 50% prior to the convention. This will make it very hard to ram a RINO down our throats.
Cris, I can't image what he's going to say tonight. He should say, "yeah, I guess no one really likes me.... I quit."
But sadly, he's not blessed with good judgment.
Joel, It's highly unlikely there will be a brokered convention. More likely than not, this will all be settled by Florida or the week thereafter.
Interesting. Jon King just said that the reason Santorum is staying in the race is because he thinks Newt will knock out Romney in Florida and then the establishment will have a "panic attack" and will turn to Santorum to fight Newt.
If that becomes the race, I'm leaving the party.
Andrew, I think I read the same article you did and I suspect Romney will lose the South, but will win the other states -- North, Northeast, West, West Coast. That should be enough overcome what Newt wins in the South.
The AP just called it for Gingrich...
Barf. They keep talking about Jeb Bush if there's a brokered convention.
Looks like Gingrich/The Gorilla is going to win it, which should surprise no one.
Now to add insult to injury, they're running pro-SOPA ads.
Personally, I'm rooting for a Jeb Bush/Rick Santorum ticket in November. I figure that way, we can't lose. Right, Andrew? :-)
T-Rav, It's not surprising, but it is disappointing. This election has gone from exciting to depressing and we're not even at the point yet where nominee Gingrich is 39% behind Obama.
All I can say is that the Mayans were right...
T-Rav, Grrr. You're trying to push me to terrorism aren't you?
Bev, Yes... yes they were.
Jeb Bush??? Please tell me that it's a joke. I have nothing against Jeb, but a Bush can't win, just like a Texan can't win.
WE TOLD YOU!!
Bev, He's been the name CNN is talking about. They said the establishment if trying to figure out how to pull him into the race.
LOL! Krauthammer admits he's fallible!
Come on Andrew...you know you want it!
Incidentally, I read that the Romney campaign recently sent an "anniversary cake" to Gingrich campaign headquarters to mark the 15th anniversary of being charged with ethics violations as Speaker. See, stuff like this is part of the reason I can't stand Romney.
Wish you were me, don't ya Charles?
T-Rav, How can you not like someone who sends cake to friends?
T-Rav:
politicians: They all eat cake!!!
Looks like Romney's speaking first.
It coulda' been us, but nooooooo, we had to throw virgins into volcano instead...
I wonder if any of these candidates will start supporting big government tonight in order to disavow their racist past.
Andrew:
Romney first.
Check
Andrew, yeah, I guess that's it. (rolls eyes) It wasn't a veiled middle finger or anything.
Again, I like the fact Romney is keeping the focus on Obama.
I really don't want to play this game anymore.
T-Rav, They're all doing that sort of thing. It's stupid, but that's how politicians roll.
rlaWTX, Tell me about it. Where's the reset button?
Incidentally, I think the real story here is that Paul is finishing dead last so far, which maybe is a little unexpected. Guess that anti-military stuff didn't play so well in SC (which is more social-con than fiscal-con anyway).
we sent it to Russia!
Nice defense of capitalism!
T-Rav, I'm a little surprised by that too.
rlaWTX, Shoot, you're right. Darn it. I wonder if we can get it back?
Andrew and rla, again, once I find that portal into an alternate universe where Ryan or Jindal is running, I will post directions.
Hey, just jumping in. Had to feed the kiddos.
Romney just said something really great in a speech: "Those who pick up the weapons of the left now will find them pointed back at themselves in the future." Or something close to that.
thanks, T-Rav.
He's doing a good job of making it about more than himself.
T-Rav-
I think the chart said Paul got 4% on the last go around (McCain). They know he is not socially conservative. Paul is amoral to them.
tryanmax, I liked that too. It's a great point.
I get the Right's irritable response to feeling like the MSM and the establishment are picking our candidates - but is this bizarro world any better???
Strong finish -- always present a positive vision of what you want.
I've never understood how they can call an election with only 15% tallied? I guess they figure all counties/districts/whatever will be about the same?
Try, I think exit polling plays a big part of it.
rlaWTX, It's horrible. We're going from a guy who may or may not be a good conservative president to a guy who is a lunatic and stands no chance of winning.
Well, either way, I hate it because early calls taint later votes. It's been verified in various studies.
BTW, you should just abbreviate my name like Patti does, "T". No one else does it, but I kinda like it.
-?
CNN is reporting that Romney has got the Jeb Bush endorsement. That's good for Romney, bad for my mind.
Andrew, what is really sad is we have a choice between one sane guy and three who are insane and there's still a question about the outcome.
D:)
rlaWTX, That might be a little to abbreviated. LOL!
I prefer "Mr. T". It gives you more gravitas...
No, actually Patti has done that one, too.
"gravitas"? Blech.
"T," in my experience, most exit polls--with the exception of the '04 election--tend to get it right. Whether that's from sheer accuracy or a self-fulfilling prophecy, they mirror the results fairly well. Also, they usually don't post those anymore until just after the polls have closed, so it's a little better than it used to be.
Does anybody still care what Huckabee thinks?
tryanmax, Not only that but...
NONE OF THE THREE LUNATICS ARE AT ALL CONSERVATIVE!!!
Romney may not be a conservative, but he's MORE conservative than the other three and yet conservatives are attacking him as RINO and supporting guys who think big government is the answer (or Paul who wants to surrender to terrorists).
It's frustrating.
If it goes to a brokered convention, all bets are off.
It is more and more likely if Florida does not get behind Romney. The Media already has told us who they don't want to go against. It isn't Romney. They prefer Romney. So would Obama and Company. A brokered convention is the last thing Obama wants.
Mr. T, don't knock gravitas.... it keeps you from falling off the planet.
T, my grandparents do. < sigh >
Even though this is now a foregone conclusion, it's worth paying attention to the gap between Newt and Romney. Right now it's at 15 points, which I honestly was not expecting. If it's a total blowout, that may give Newt a lot of momentum going into Florida, and if he pulls out a victory there, we've got a fight on our hands.
Um, Ron? The majority of those remaining delegates are in winner-take-all states, which you won't win. And your numbers sure ain't growing here.
make the crazy man go away!!
Woo Hoo! The battle for third rages on!
Paul speaks like he's talking to his staff. He doesn't seem to get that he's talking to the country. He should be talking about what he believes, not giving a profit/loss statement.
I pity the fool who uses my name without authorization!
5 times more than last time and he's still 4th... he won't live long
enough to run enough times to win!
If my grandpa was on crazy pills, and then stopped taking them, that's what Ron Paul would remind me of right now.
Paul just basically stated that he won't go away until he either wins the presidency or he dies. I'm assuming he is having vital organs sequentially exchanged with bionic replacements, so he'll probably never die.
rlaWTX, He's projected to finally win election in 2114 assuming nothing goes wrong in the meantime.
T-R & T - lol
By 2114 he'll seem sane. But it will still only be by comparison.
By the way, I would like to point out that Paul made his speech virtually without prior notice and thus upstaged Santorum, who had given notice and was about to speak. Totally jackass move.
There's a Yeti movie on the other channel. Just saying.
The Fed and the Illuminati are out to control us all!! Read about it in my newsletters--but ignore all the racist stuff! GOLD!!!!
are Yeti's running??? what's their platform?
he is the "next generation"?
I imagine Paul yelling "GOLD!" like an old-timey prospector/
Leave me out of this.
T, the Paulbots would run Paul's corpse for President if it came to that. I'm not joking.
rlaWTX, LOL! I'd vote Yeti! :)
Aha! Bionic organs AND fueled by Pepsi. I knew I must've missed something.
T-Rav, I don't want to scare you, but the kid next to Paul is a clone....
The Boys from Ron Paul.
The girl looks rather clone-ish, as well.
We stand for total disarmament, especially of small mountain villages, lots of snow, and being furnished with the occasional helpless hiker. Vote for us.
oops, making sense!
tryanmax, They're all clones! Some were more successful than others.
Was the American Revolution a declared war?
Yeti for president!
Don't vote for the Yeti, they are YINOs. If you want mountain village carnage vote for Big Foot!
I think that guy standing next to Ron Paul might have been one of those clone troopers from the Star Wars prequels. One could say the same about Paul himself.
Has anyone noticed that Paul has said nothing?
T-Rav, Paul's no clone. He's Darth Goldstandard.
online gambling???????
I'll only vote Yeti if he promises to make OctoShark his running mate.
Ok... I give Paul props for supporting hackers.
Bigfoot and the Yetis are part of the same system! I am the only true mountain monster in the race! I will give you the gold standard and everything else you so deeply desire! Vote for me!
Wanna bet he finishes with...
"Ok, read Chapter 7 for next week. I'll be in my office on Thursday but not Friday."
Like on drugs!
How long has he been rambling on? It feels like an eternity.
I am the only genuine mountain creature. I will introduce a goat-blood currency standard. Vote for me!
is there someone that will give him the high sign when it's time for the class to be over?
and his steady growth has been so inconsequential as to be below notice!
el chubacabre isn't even a citizen!
Leave us out of this.
Leave us out of this.
Leave us out of this...
Ricky "I'm Not Rick James B*itch" Santorum is up next.
Sarah Palin needs to shut up.
Yay. The goblin's finished speaking.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
sadly, Chupacabre, Sasquatch, Yeti, & Big Foot couldn't be doing much worse...
rla, really? After twenty minutes of that or however long it was, you think Palin was going on too long?
T-Rav, David Bowie is the Goblin King!
rlaWTX, I'm on CNN, what is Palin saying?
Uh, Bigfoot, I'm gonna need to see a birth certificate for you. You've been sighted in almost every part of the northern hemisphere. How do we know you are a citizen?
no, Fox just announced Palin was going to be yakking in a bit - after her pro-Grinch statements, I'm blaming her for my interest in Yetis.
And did Fox really just run a pro-PIPA/SOPA commercial???
That's racist! You wouldn't ask that of the Loch Ness monster and he's running for governor of Florida!
rlaWTX, They're running the same lousy commercial on CNN all night and it makes me want to punch my television.
None of you are gay right?
I am the only one qualified to review the birth certificates and other documents of these candidates, and I hereby declare that Sasquatch and Bigfoot are both frauds! The Yeti and El Chupacabra are the only legitimate monsters!
Grrrrrrr.
Sorry, just warming up.
Yeah, I guess Fox is hard up for advertising or something.
What ryhmes with Rick?
Crowd - keep it clean or Rick'll get ya!
Thank you Cleveland!!!!! Woo hooo!
rla, I see. But was Palin really going on record as "pro-Grinch," or did you just make a Freudian slip? ;-)
I said what I meant...
Does that mean his wife should be running for President?
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
T-R, is she less sanctimonious?
rlaWTX, On the one hand, I would think everyone is less sanctimonious. On the other hand, she hasn't shot him yet.
This from a man who wants to control everything!
Uh, Guys... Palin didn't endorse Newt. She just said if she lived in South Carolina, she would vote for Newt. Her husband endorsed Newt.
Palin is really looking for a brokered convention.
Good Lord, is every guy there wearing a sweater vest?
I will now show you vacation photos from Summerset.
T-Rav, Yes... because they're freaks.
thanks for clarifying, Joel.
Rick - gimme a break.
So what happened Rick because nothing you just said happened you negative sh*t?
Joel, technically you're right, but it's a de facto endorsement under the circumstances. Besides, when placed next to the endorsements of Thomas Sowell, Michael Reagan, and Chuck Norris (no, really!), it just helps build momentum for Newt.
... and their welfare checks. I've been there.
take a drink, Andrew...
is the next race in PA??????
rlaWTX, No, it's Florida.
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What hate Rick!
What on earth is that crowd chanting?
America, what a country! Where an idiot can run for President.
Guys, lots of Pennsylvanians live in South Carolina and Florida. Weren't you aware?
Hey, dat's my line!
just making sure I hadn't missed something with all of his PA posturing.
T-R - "we pick Rick"
"It's a simple formula -- I tax most of you to support some of you. Mussolini did it and it worked well for him!"
-- Rick S.
now he's going to fix the atmosphere???
I LOVE HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE GOVERNMENT!!
OH - huge gov't fixes the atmosphere! got it!
and thanks the the demographics update for SC, T-Rav.
Anyone who thinks this man is a conservative really should look at the American Progressive Party... they're for you.
rlaWTX, They fled Pennsylvania because of the things Dippy is trying to force on the rest of the country.
I think Vichy France did a lot of this in the 1940s. Worked out well for them, as I recall.
Excuse me while I swear:
"We are not a party that has a heart."
*@%# YOU RICKY YOU SOCIALIST PR*CK!
*@%# YOU RICKY YOU SOCIALIST PR*CK!
*@%# YOU RICKY YOU SOCIALIST PR*CK!
T-Rav, Yes, it worked well in Soviet Russia too. That's Ricky vision.
I'm looking for "that candidate", and still looking...
If conservatives pick this man then we deserve to lose... and have the country nuked.
Andrew, I've got some (sort of) good news for you; Jeb Bush is reportedly backing off his Romney endorsement for now after the Gingrich blowout tonight. Feel better?
heeeeeere's Sarah!
T-Rav, That does not make me feel better... not at all.
so, she didn't so much like Newt as liking the fight to go on...
So Andrew, I gather from your remarks that if it were to come down to a choice between Gingrich and Santorum, you would (however reluctantly) vote for Newt?
Andrew!!!
LOL! Rick knows best!
I think I'm going to take a look at Obama again. He couldn't be worse than what the Republican Party is doing.
Second look at me?
Sarah Palin fatigue....
T-Rav, Here's my order of preference in order:
1. Satan
2. Mussolini
3. Newt/Obama (close call)
4. Stalin
5. Hitler
6. (turn terrorist and blow up the world)
7. Santorum
Go, Newt! Go, Rick!
Andrew, tell us how you really feel!
I gotta admit that Ricky and Newt are both a little higher up my list than that. And Obama is lower.
Cris, I honestly can't believe Santorum actually thinks he's a conservative and I can't believe ANYONE supports him. What has gone wrong with the conservative movement?
Forget Alcohol. Once you've gone Crack, you'll never go back!
rlaWTX, If I'm going to pick a socialist, I want one who doesn't delude himself into thinking he's a conservative.
Dear Crack, excellent timing! Where might we meet?
I think my friends who have imbibed the Rick koolaid hear his soc-con stuff and listen only superficially to his econ stuff. He makes them feel good.
(my main Santorum supporting friend is also a reader of Marvin Olasky - the creator of "compassionate conservatism")
Hey, I'll just say it--if it comes down to Obama vs. Newt, I'll vote Newt, and if it comes down to Obama vs. Santorum, I'll vote Santorum. It's still Barack Obama.
yep, T-Rav.
rlaWTX, In Santorum's case it's FoolAid.
